In its 100 years of existence the ACO has become a commercial company in addition to the Club itself and the organisation of the Le Mans 24 Hours. What have you got to sell?
"We’ve got two sales focuses around the twelve events on the 2008 programme: one aimed at the professional clientele and the other at the public as a whole. To meet the communications needs of companies, entrants and their partners we’ve got 75 000 m2 of reception areas, 16 000m2 sales/restaurant zones, 120 hectares welcome and car parks.
At present, we’ve got more than 290 partners and exhibitors. Sales around the Le Mans 24 Hours in June represent 70% of our yearly activity. Concerning the income of the ACO itself 69% comes from the sales sector as follows: boutique (2%), brands (3%), TV rights (6%), marketing (26%) and ticket sales (32%).
Since you took up this job in the ACO in June 2004, how have the sales around the Le Mans and 24-Hour brands evolved?
"On the initiative of the ACO President Jean-Claude Plassart we’ve set up a sales management company with a pro-active approach: namely, go out and find partners rather than relying on the fame of the Le Mans 24 Hours. This dynamic policy has borne fruit and four years later we’ve increased our turnover.
Our strength and originality come from the fact that we design the products that we sell, the official boutique, the temporary ones and the sales outlets, and we also look after logistics on the spot.
Licensing has taken on increasing importance in our activity, as we are looking for high-profile partners to use the Le Mans and the 24-Heures brands. For textile products we’ve just signed a 3-year partnership deal with Le Coq Sportif."
As a passionate lover of the Le Mans 24 Hours, what are your best memory and your forecast for 2008?
"Jean Rondeau’s victory in 1980. As a pure-blooded lad from Le Mans to see another guy from the town drive in the race, build his own car and win with it was the fulfilment of an ambition and a fantasy.
As for my 2008 forecast I’m hoping for a battle of such intensity that Audi and Peugeot will be on the same lap as the end approaches!"
