Erstmals Studenten-Team bei den 24 Stunden von Le Mans
Spezielle Rennveranstaltungen für Universitäts-Teams sind nichts Neues. Doch nun schickt die japanische Tokai University am 14. Juni 2008 erstmals ein Studenten-Geschwader zu den offiziellen 24 Stunden von Le Mans – das hat es in den 85 Jahren dieses legendären Motorsportveranstaltung noch nicht gegeben. Unterstützt wird das „Le Mans Challenge Project" vom Reifenhersteller YOKOHAMA, der nicht nur seine ADVAN-Rennreifen, sondern auch mehr als 20 Jahre Erfahrung auf dem französischen Kurs einbringt.
Gestartet wird in der höchsten Klasse LMP1 (Prototypen) mit einem modifizierten Courage-Oreca, der bereits einmal an den 24 Stunden teilnahm. Das Triebwerk, ein 4-Liter-V8-Twin-Turbo, wurde jedoch in Eigenregie entwickelt. Der Startschuss für das ausschließlich von Studenten und ihrem Professor betreute „Le Mans Challenge Project" fiel bereits 2001.
Die Leitung hat Prof. Yoshimasa Hayashi, der während seiner Zeit bei Nissan Motor selbst an Langstreckenrennen teilnahm. In Le Mans wird das Auto jedoch von den drei Fahrern Toshio Suzuki, Masami Kageyama und Haruki Kurosawa pilotiert, die auf eine vollständige Teamstruktur zurückgreifen können.
YOKOHAMA ist vom ganzheitlichen Ansatz der universitären Aktion begeistert, die von der Konstruktion des Fahrzeugs bis hin zum finalen Renneinsatz reicht und bei den Studenten eine Vielzahl von Fähigkeiten fördert, wie Eigenmotivation, praktische Fertigkeiten und gemeinsamen Kampfgeist. Insgesamt starten bei den 24 Stunden 2008 in den Klassen LMP1/LMP2 (Prototypen) und LM-GT1/LM-GT2 (Fahrzeuge mit Serienbasis) 99 Fahrzeuge.
Der Reifenhersteller YOKOHAMA unterstützt neben dem „Le Mans Challenge Project" mit dem „OSU Dakar Rally Challenge Project" der Osaka Sangyo University ein weiteres Studentenprojekt, bei der auch Umweltaspekte im Vordergrund stehen.
