A1 GRAND PRIX MAKES PLANS FOR THE 2006/07 SEASON - An A1 GP Team for Luxembourg and A1 Grand Prix of Nations in Luxembourg?
A1 Grand Prix’s Executive Board and Seatholders met today in London to discuss the upcoming season and a variety of changes, both commercial and technical, to be implemented in the Series’ second season to commence 1 October in Zandvoort, the Netherlands.
Among discussion points that were agreed were:
* The extension of the Feature race from 60 minutes to 70 minutes.
* The reduction of the Sprint race from 30 minutes to 20 minutes as well as a change in the points system, allocating points to the top six finishers only.
* The points system and prize money for the Feature race will remain unchanged.
* The time between the Sprint race and the Feature race will be increased to nearly three and a half hours allowing for scrutineering, the lodging of any protests and technical adjustments to the cars.
Recent A1 television deals included license agreement renewals in the Netherlands with RTL7 and TV3 in New Zealand. In addition Sky Sports UK has agreed to allow a delayed race broadcast to be made available on terrestrial television.
A1’s broadcast team will be in France later this week meeting with French broadcast carriers as well as EuroSport, the incumbent licensee, to discuss next year’s broadcast plans in the territory.
A1 Grand Prix has committed to a 12 race calendar for the 2006/07 season with specific locations to be confirmed shortly. New franchise applications were also discussed as well as a general review of the performance of all existing franchises with a view towards potential changes in location and ownership for the coming season.

Un projet ambitieux
Le Luxembourg pourrait participer à la saison de Formule A 1 à condition de trouver l'argent

Jean Fuchs, président de l'Association luxembourgeoise des professionnels du patrimoine, Daniel Tesch, directeur de l'ACL, et Yves Wagner, président de la commission sportive de l'ACL, ont présenté hier un projet qui permettrait au Luxembourg de participer à la saison de Formule A 1.
La Formule A 1 est un championnat qui se dispute en intersaison de la saison de F 1, donc entre septembre et avril. Les voitures sont d'un niveau de puissance et de rapidité très proche de celui des F 1 et les parcours sont pour une grande partie les mêmes. Mais voilà, les similitudes s'arrêtent là . En effet, le championnat d'A 1 se court par pays, chacun ayant droit à une voiture. La voiture sera aux couleurs nationales. Elles sont toutes identiques, pas de moteurs ni de pneus différents. Du coup, le budget des écuries se voit considérablement réduit. Et c'est là tout l'intérêt de l 'A 1. Jean Fuchs explique: «Le budget d'une bonne écurie en F 1 est de 100 millions d'euros par an. L'A 1 met les nations en compétition est non les marques . Tout le monde se trouve sur un pied d'égalité. Le budget d'une équipe sur cinq ans s'élève à 20 millions d'euros.»
L'idée des promoteurs luxembourgeois est de rassembler les fonds afin de présenter une équipe luxembourgeoise pour la saison 2007-2008.
Yves Wagner: «Les retombées pour le Luxembourg seraient énormes . Le championnat A 1 a été créé il y a deux ans. L'année dernière, 400 millions de téléspectateurs ont vu le championnat. Le Luxembourg pourrait nouer des contacts économiques avec des pays aussi différents que la Thaïlande ou le Mexique. En effet, chaque pays qui y participe a une quinzaine de sponsors nationaux qui ont la même passion.»
Dans quinze jours, la nouvelle saison sera présentée à Silverstone . «Nous allons profiter de l'occasion pour discuter encore avec les responsables . Mais ce n'est pas notre premier contact. Il y a un mois, le numéro trois de l'organisation s'est déplacé au Luxembourg pour peaufiner notre projet .» Reste à convaincre les partenaires financiers. «Je suis confiant . Les budgets ne seront pas énormes. Une entreprise luxembourgeoise devra débourser environ 100.000 euros par an pour être partenaire. Entre le secteur des finances , du commerce et de l'industrie, les intéressés ne devraient pas manquer », prédit Jean Fuchs.
Les promoteurs du projet de participation luxembourgeoise ont déjà fait un travail de prospection. Dans un deuxième temps, toutes les entreprises intéressées seront invitées au premier Grand Prix de la saison qui se déroulera le 1er octobre à Zandvoord aux Pays-Bas.
A la recherche d'un pilote
Une fois les fonds rassemblés, il faudra encore trouver l'heureux élu pour piloter le bolide en rouge blanc bleu. «Nous allons lancer un concours de sélection. Actuellement, nous disposons de plusieurs bons pilotes de karting », explique Yves Wagner. Dans l'esprit des promoteurs luxembourgeois, une manche de ce championnat pourrait même être organisée au Luxembourg. «Les responsables d'A 1 Grand Prix cherchent encore un circuit en ville comme l'est Monaco en F 1. Le Luxembourg pourrait être candidat. Le budget pour une telle organisation tournerait aux alentours de cinq millions d'euros pour la première année . Il s'agit en fait de tout le matériel de sécurité nécessaire à une telle organisation. Les années suivantes cela reviendrait à beaucoup moins cher.»
