Antonio Spavone: “I expect a good feeling in Marrakech”

At just 17, Antonio Spavone is one of the younger drivers on the Auto GP grid: coming from Formula Abarth, the Italian talent from Naples has decided to take an early leap to powerful machinery with Auto GP and is boasting some very good performances: already a top ten finsher in Monza, Antonio confirmed his potential in Valencia and he could have done better if it wasn’t for some issues in both pit-stops.
“In both my pit-stops one of the rear wheels remained stuck on the hub, and that cost me a lot of seconds. It was a pity especially in Race 1, because without that glitch I could have finished in 5th or 6th place, and that would have changed my second race also. Anyway, I have to recognize that in Valencia I didn’t feel as confident as I was in Monza.
It’s strange because the Italian round was the first event on the car for me, but I immediately liked it and consequently the weekend seemed easy. Valencia is a very different track and I never found that ‘perfect’ feeling throughout the weekend”.
Third round is coming, on the Marrakech street circuit. What do you expect?
“It will be my first time on a street track, and I’m looking forward to the challenge. I did some laps on the simulator and I have to say that being so close to the walls at those speeds really makes an impression. Anyway, it’s not so different from Monza: braking and traction out of the slow chicanes seem to be the key also in Morocco, so I expect to have the same good feeling I had on the Italian track. If that will be the case, a good result will be in our reach”.
You’re also doing GP3 this season, jumping from a car to another is an hard task?
“Well it’s not so difficult: the Auto GP car is very ‘friendly’ in delivering the power, it’s really manageable, so even if the power output is double compared to GP3 the jump is not too hard. What’s really different is the braking: with Auto GP the speed on the straight is really impressive, so you have to brake very hard to slow down when approaching the corners.
With GP3, instead, you don’t want to lose too much speed because it takes much more time to get it back, so you try to carry as much speed as possible into the corner. When you understand that, you just have to switch from one mindset to the other, it’s not too hard”.
You’re nearly the youngest in a very young grid, how does it feel?
“Well it’s not just the age that matters, but also experience. I have completed one year in F.Abarth alone, a car with an output of just 180 bhp, and now I’m racing on a car that boasts 550 bhp, it’s a big difference. Furthermore, most of the drivers I’m racing with have at least one F3 season behind their back.
Others, like Quaife-Hobbs, already tested GP2 and F1, so obviously they can use this experience to their advantage. It’s not something I’m worried about, but it’s something that you have to take into account when you’re evaluating performances”.

Not only to fulfil his job as a driver coach for Daniël de Jong, the 25-year old received another opportunity to drive the 550 hp strong car at the Spanish track of Valencia.
