Bavaria Beer Champ Car Grand Prix of Holland- Friday Qualifying quotes

31.08.2007: Bavaria Beer Champ Car Grand Prix of Holland- Friday Qualifying quotes

Justin Wilson #9 CDW Cosworth/DP01/Bridgestone (Qualified 1st) – "The #9 CDW car was fantastic. I’ve got to thank the whole team. They’ve worked hard this weekend and it’s nice to be quick in the wet. We weren’t quite as quick in the dry, but we felt we were in with a shout this weekend.

So when it started to rain I thought ‘this should be good’. I was determined to go for it and hoped that when the track started drying we’d get a quick lap in.

I feel pretty confident with the way the weekend is going. We’ll spend tomorrow working on the dry set-up, but knowing we’re on the front row definitely takes some of the pressure off."

Simon Pagenaud #15 Aussie Vineyards Cosworth/DP01/Bridgestone (Qualified 2nd) – "We had a fantastic car from the beginning to the end but it just was that I got blocked in the last two laps.

I couldn't make a lap at the end. It was a bit of a shame because Team Australia gave me a really good car and I can't thank them enough. I had a blast out there. It is a really great track, lots of fun and I hope we will be able to make it tomorrow."

Graham Rahal #2 Medi | Zone Cosworth/DP01/Bridgestone (Qualified 3rd) – "It’s always good to be up front. If it were dry we could have had a better qualifying session. Our car was definitely very good in the dry but unfortunately it rained. We did show that we had the pace in the rain but obviously we would prefer it to be dry. We’ve had so many races in the rain this year that it gets old after a while.

I would prefer to have a dry race and have some close racing. The track is a ton of fun; it’s probably the best track we’ve been to but it’s going to be difficult if not impossible to pass so it’s critical to qualify well. It was tough for me to come to grips with the car on the circuit in the rain.

At first, I kind of psyched myself out and told myself it was going to be really slippery in the rain because yesterday on the track walk you got the sense that with only a little mist it was going to be slick. I think Justin ran a new set of rain tires at the end but we ran the same ones the whole session.

At the end the car performed very well and I felt I had pretty good grip on the circuit. I’m pretty happy with how this whole day has gone. We started the weekend off right."

Tristan Gommendy #22 Pay by Touch / MegaSpirea Cosworth/ DP01/ Bridgestone (Qualified 3rd) – "The Pay By Touch MegaSpirea PKV Racing team did a good job with the dry setup and we were ready for a dry qualification. For sure in the dry we would have been in the top-five. However, just before the qualification it started raining. So, the crew put on the rain setup and right from the beginning I started pushing the car.

I think I did quite a good lap early in the session when the track was drying a little. I think it would have been possible to fight for the pole or at least second, but I was surprised by how quickly the track was drying, so I was late going for my fastest lap. Overall, it was a good qualification."

Oriol Servia #7 Indeck Cosworth/DP01/Bridgestone (Qualified 5th) – "We were quite happy with car on the dry, we thought we had chance to fight for the pole. When its wet things change so quickly, both runs actually were wet at the start and then dried towards the end, so its tricky just being out there at the right time when it was driest was the key.

I think we had a decent shot, we didn’t do anything really good or anything really bad which is the trick on the wet. We ended up P5, I think on the dry we would’ve been faster but its not a bad place to be. I love the track, I think this the most fun I’ve had driving one of these race cars, its just so fast and so challenging.

These cars handle so well, it’s just a lot of fun. For the race its going to be very challenging to overtake just because of the nature of the track, there’s no hard braking zones so definitely qualifying and pit stops are going to be the key."

Sebastien Bourdais #1 McDonalds Cosworth/DP01/Bridgestone (Qualified 6th) – "The McDonald’s car was good in dry conditions but we just gave the wet set up a shot when the rain started in qualifying and it was just reasonable, but not too comfortable.

It had dried out a little but on the second run it was starting to rain really bad when I went back out so I decided to save the tires because it might rain all weekend. The weather is supposed to be like this all weekend so hopefully we will hit it right when the conditions change."

Robert Doornbos #14 Team Minardi USA Cosworth/DP01/Bridgestone (Qualified 7th) - "It’s great to be here and see so many fans out here at the track on the first day. The circuit was really fast in the first few laps in dry conditions and we were looking strong for the qualifying session.

We should have been on the front row, but I was held up by another driver on my last and quickest lap. We have another shot at pole tomorrow, and we’ll be aiming to put on the best possible show for all the Dutch fans who will be here."

Will Power #5 Aussie Vineyards Cosworth/DP01/Bridgestone (Qualified 8th) – "We went back and forth on the tires and lost a bit of time there and unfortunately we didn’t have the pace today either. It’s a great circuit, but unfortunately the weather caused the problem. Hopefully it’s dry tomorrow and we can qualify better.

We just need to get on top of it tonight, but I know we can, the Team Australia guys do a great job, so I’m confident for tomorrow."

Alex Tagliani #8 Rocketsports Cosworth/DP01/Bridgestone (Qualified 9th) – "I am really happy to be here in Holland and to drive on this great track. I think that the #8 Rocketsports car was more setup for the dry conditions. We didn’t make the proper changes that we needed for the wet tires, so that threw us off this afternoon. When the rain started to come down, we just didn’t adapt our car to it.

The track started to dry, and when I came in between runs, we didn’t want to make any changes to the car because we were considering putting on slicks. But then it started to rain again and it was too late to make a change, so we just had to live with a pretty dry set up car. That penalized us at the end, but hopefully the weather will be there for us tomorrow and then we can show what we can do on the dry track."

Paul Tracy #3 Indeck Cosworth/DP01/Bridgestone (Qualified 10th) – "We should’ve been farther up the grid but we lost our fastest lap for causing a red flag at the beginning of the session. I pushed really hard every single lap because I had to put in two quick times. It was tricky out there with the wet conditions; the grip was changing by the second as the track dried and then when it rained again.

This is a really fast track so it’s a shame that it rained because the fans didn’t really get to see these cars at full speed, but hopefully tomorrow it will stay dry for qualifying and we can put on a good show."

Neel Jani #21 Red Bull-Gulfstream Cosworth/DP01/Bridgestone (Qualified 11th) – "In qualifying, on the first set of tires I burned them up quite quickly, so I came in for a second set. I went out again and the rain had gotten heavier and I thought there was no sense in wasting the set of tires because the track was getting slower.

But, then the last two laps, the last minute of the session, it started to get dry again and that is where some of the guys improved their time. It was a misjudgment on my part. I just thought it would keep drizzling and I wouldn’t be able to go any faster. So, we will just have to see what happens for the Red Bull Gulfstream PKV Racing team tomorrow."

Bruno Junqueira #19 Sonny’s Bar-B-Q Cosworth/DP01/Bridgestone (Qualified 12th) – "I’m very disappointed with qualifying today. The first part of the qualifying I was running as high as P2. I felt the car really good on the Bridgestone rain tires. On my last lap on the Bridgestone rain tires I got caught up in some traffic so I dropped a few positions. Then I tried to go out on dry tires right when it started to really rain.

Then I went back out on the Bridgestone rain tires and my second lap was really, really fast as I caught up to Katherine Legge which proved to me that my car was fast. I’m disappointed with my position because I really thought we could have qualified in the top-five today. I just hope that we have dry conditions tomorrow so we can improve our starting position."

Dan Clarke #4 Minardi Team USA Cosworth/DP01/Bridgestone (Qualified 14th) - "First of all, it’s great to be back in the car this weekend. As far as today is concerned, it was a case of changing conditions out there this afternoon.

We came up with a strategy, but it just didn’t quite coincide with the way the weather developed. As a result, we weren’t strong enough when the track was at its best. We’ve still got tomorrow and Sunday to get it right, though – and we will."

Jan Heylen #34 Grafiprint Cosworth/DP01/Bridgestone (Qualified 15th) – "I’m definitely not happy with my results in qualifying today. We were running really well during warm-up and even posted the fastest time of the day but the light rain made things difficult once the session got started.

Our setup on the car appears to be good and in the end I had hoped to have a faster lap on the rain tires but I messed up at the beginning of that final lap and just wasn’t able to produce a better time. I just hope that we won’t have rain tomorrow and we can take some dry qualifying laps to get a better starting position for Sunday’s race."

Katherine Legge #11 Dale Coyne Racing Cosworth/DP01/Bridgestone (Qualified 17th) – "We are unsure what is wrong with the car after qualifying today, but we will go back and take a look at the data. We made a lot of changes to the car, but the unexpected rain changed a lot of things. Hopefully we can make the necessary changes so we can do better tomorrow since there is a very good chance that it will rain tomorrow."
