Last weekend, the NEC Formula Renault 2.0 participants took a stop at the Dutch TT circuit in Assen, where the 11th and 12th race of the season were to be held. A majority of the top drivers were not present, as they were participating in the meeting of the Eurocup in Misano.

During the weekend in Oschersleben, Frédéric tried a new setup on his car and in Assen it proved to be a succesful change. In the practice session on friday, Fred was second fastest, only half a tenth slower than the more experienced Dutchman Ricardo van der Ende. "That is a good result for someone who never had driven in Assen", Frédéric commented after the race. "The most important thing has still to come, namely the qualifying."

The qualifying was scheduled for saturday and Frédéric drove the fourth fastest time in the first part of the session. In the second part, Fred could only drive one fastest lap and was sixth fastest.

At the start of the first race, Frédéric wasn’t able to gain positions, but in the laps after it he gained two places. Then he drove behind Afanasiev and tried to get past him. In that manoeuvre, Frédéric went off the track and fell back to seventh. After an incident involving Afanasiev and Da Costa, Fred moved to fourth position. Frédéric said: "It looked quite good and I saw Kool and Marinescu in front of me. Because of a problem with the transmission, I was not able to get in their slipstream. Two laps before the end of the race I missed the apex in the first corner and drove against some cones. My front wing and nose got heavily damaged. I couldn’t prevent that two of my opponents overtook me." ‘Fish’ drove the overall fastest lap during the race. His time was almost two tenths of a second faster than that of racewinner Van der Ende. But... "We need to solve the problem with the transmission before the second race."

Frédéric started from sixth position in the second race. In the first corner, he tried to overtake some of his opponents taking the outside of the turn. That didn’t work and he lost a position when Retera overtook him. Still on the first lap, he overtook Chukanov and after five laps the car feeled great and Fred was able to attack.

"Retera and Da Costa had build up a gap, but I was closing in on them. As I wanted to overtake Retera, he suddenly closed the door. We both went of the track and Retera had to retire. I was able to continue, but had lost two positions to my teammate and Chukanov. I overtook Chukanov before the end of the race and finished seventh." Frédéric drove on old tyres and set the third fastest lap of the race, showing again that he belongs in front.

Frédéric can look back to this weekend with a positive feeling: "I showed that I’m very fast, but I’m always lacking of luck. Maybe it is time for me to bring a talisman to the track."

In three weeks, Frédéric will participate in the 7th and 8th race of the Eurocup Formula Renault 2.0 at the Nürburgring.
