Greenhouse gas spawns pharmaceutical raw material

Algae can perform great services when it comes to reducing concentrations of greenhouse gases. And micro-algae are particularly well suited to such environmentally beneficial actions as they work extremely effectively. Furthermore, the algae that German researchers from the state of Saxony-Anhalt will be bringing with them to BIOTECHNICA 2009 can do more than 'just' reduce the greenhouse gas CO2; they can also generate pharmaceutical raw materials at the same time.

As well as ensuring that industrial CO2 emissions are absorbed by their algae, the scientists also want to enable the effective production of chemical-pharmaceutical materials such as lipids and carotenoids. And that is not all: once such materials have been extracted, the residual biomass can be used to create energy in order to help contribute to the establishment of a sustainable cycle.

Biotechnology in toothpaste

Just how easily biotechnology can improve our everyday lives is demonstrated by the Emden Institute of Environmental Technology (Eutec), a part of the Emden/Leer University of Applied Sciences, as they present a new type of toothpaste at BIOTECHNICA 2009. What is special about this particular protective paste is that it contains chitosan extracted from crab shells.

Background information: this renewable material from the sea binds to harmful bacteria that can lead to tooth decay. It also helps with the healing of wounds. The chitosan is extracted from waste from the fishing industry in a special facility at the university and is added as a natural ingredient to the 'Dentachin' brand of toothpaste. The result: a fantastic smile thanks to biotechnology.

BIOTECHNICA Student Prize 2009 for outstanding final thesis work

Things will get really exciting on Wednesday 7th October at the BIOPRO Baden-Württemberg Pavilion at BIOTECHNICA 2009, as this is the time and venue for the presentation of the BIOTECHNICA Student Prize 2009 by the German Association of Biology, Bioscience and Biomedicine (VBIO).

The prize will be awarded to the authors of outstanding experimental final thesis work for university degrees or state examinations in the field of bioscience. A critical aspect that will be evaluated is the interdisciplinary nature of the work - it must involve innovative thinking and research beyond the scope of an individual area of expertise. Furthermore, the work must also involve a spirit of scientific pioneering and exploration. The winners will be announced at the award ceremony from 10.30 am.

Odorless wastewater gullies

Decaying materials in sewage pipes lead to the production of hydrogen sulfide, which smells strongly of rotten eggs even in small quantities. This substance also corrodes the concrete walls of sewage conduits. Scientists at Braunschweig Technical University in Germany will be demonstrating at BIOTECHNICA 2009 how biotechnology can be used to disperse such smells emanating from sewage gullies.

In order to prevent odors rising from manhole covers in residential areas, the university scientists have developed biofilters that block the gases directly at their source in the wastewater channels. In practical tests carried out in cooperation with the Weddel-Lehre Water Authority in Germany, the scientists from Braunschweig showed that the filter could stop 90 percent of the gas from passing through.

Better screening for cancer and cardiovascular diseases

Fraunhofer scientists will be presenting a new life saving diagnostics system at BIOTECHNICA 2009 in the form of the integrated micro-fluidic diagnostics platform (IMIKRID), which screens for cancer and cardiovascular diseases.

Cancer and cardiovascular diseases are still the leading causes of death in Germany. By developing improved screening technology based on molecular markers that are present in tiny concentrations in the blood, the chances of recovery and the subsequent quality of life of affected patients can be increased significantly. Systems previously used for such tests have not been sensitive enough to detect such concentrations, but IMIKRID uses a new method of detection that can identify marker quantities involving individual molecules.

The core of the diagnostics platform is a micro-fluidic chip with micro channels. In the micro channels on the silicon chip there are four independent bio-sensors that can detect individual molecules by using different sensory procedures. The entire system is only a few centimeters in size and is thereby ten times smaller than previous analysis tools. This miniaturization makes it possible, for the first time, to provide the screening as a routine mobile diagnosis procedure in medical practices, ambulances, hospitals wards or as a portable device carried by patients.

Simply disable hereditary diseases

Cure hereditary diseases by simply turning off the gene that causes the condition - this is the goal that scientists working on the 'Intelligent siRNA Technologies' fundamental knowledge project at the Friedrich-Schiller University in Jena have set themselves. The findings are still somewhat embryonic in nature, but the first successful results can be seen at BIOTECHNICA 2009.

The researchers have established a mechanism that can inhibit, by means of tiny molecules and with pinpoint precision, the passing on of genetic information from relevant genes in individual cells and tissues. And the first product - the 'siRNA Intelligence Kit' - is now ready to be launched on the market.

Genetic test reveals product piracy

Product pirates make illegal copies of almost everything, from branded jeans to tools and medication. This type of theft could soon be brought to an end though, as shown by PlasmidFactory at BIOTECHNICA 2009. The trick used by the smart minds at the biotech business is to provide genuine articles with a genetic fingerprint.

PlasmidFactory has developed a new method that involves the marking of products with modified DNA - the substance that usually carries genetic information. DNA consists of four distinct components that are positioned next to each other in chains - these are the so-called bases. The result is an alphabet with four letters, which can be encrypted. The primed DNA is then, for example, mixed with paint and applied to the product or its packaging. The authenticity of such products can then be checked by simply identifying the encryption of a small sample and comparing it with the code defined for that product.
