RapidX: For the first time Digital Factory (Hall 17) will focus on networked engineering solutions
Under the umbrella of HANNOVER MESSE 2008 (21 - 25 April) "Digital Factory" will break new ground - as evidenced in the special display "RapidX". The CAD software company Autodesk will team up with the materials handling specialist HUBTEX to demonstrate the benefits of networked product development. Coordinated by the NC Society (NCG), "RapidX" will feature contributions by numerous external partners, e.g. Gotha Design und Marketing, CADEXperience, ICIDO, E&H Formtechnik-Entwicklung, EOS, and SolidCAM.
Even more user-friendly than ever before, "Digital Factory" will present a complete array of IT tools for product development and production, with special emphasis on practical industrial applications.
The goal is to illustrate the pivotal role of modern IT in engineering and production planning. Several different scenarios will be featured:
- The first scenario centres on the creation of a combined control console and steering wheel for a forklift truck. The initial design study is completed using "Alias". 3D modelling is carried out on "Autodesk Inventor".
Ergonomic testing is performed with the aid of ICIDO virtual reality software and "Powerwall" projection technology. This step also includes the design of the cable connections between the control unit and the instruments. The finalized model (STL format) is exported to EOS, prior to creating a one-off prototype on a rapid manufacturing machine. This process would not be feasible on the basis of standardized components.
- The second scenario shows how the mould is created on the basis of the 3D data model. To this end E&H Formtechnik-Entwicklung uses "Inventor", followed by "SolidCAM" for NC programming purposes. The movements of the milling tool are simulated on the computer monitor. The visitors can compare the finished mould directly with the digital models.
- The third scenario concerns the 3D development, computation and production of thick sheet-metal components using NC-controlled bending machinery and laser cutters.
- Visitors will have the opportunity to view the finished HUBTEX side loader. They can also don a set of 3D goggles and view the cab interior on the Powerwall. For instance, they can assess at a glance what the driver can see through the cab windows when the vehicle is located in the warehouse aisle.
- The PDM system "Productstream" is responsible for administering the development data in such a way that it is accessible and transparent to all concerned.
A further highlight: RapidX will provide an insight into previous engineering methods. How did HUBTEX develop components in the past? What was the basis for final approval? To what extent was it possible to combine existing components and data with the new engineering tools? What advantages does digital engineering have over conventional models and prototypes?
Seldom before has such an extensive display been staged. RapidX will add a new dimension to Digital Factory - by focussing on engineering IT in practical everyday applications. Just like in real life.
