Technology Advancements in Cars Since the Millennium

20.04.2017: Technology has come on leaps and bounds since the turn of the millennium and this has transformed dozens of industries.

Technology has come on leaps and bounds since the turn of the millennium and this has transformed dozens of industries.

None more so than the automotive industry, as the technological advancements have resulted in cars which are much more fun, comfortable, efficient and safe to drive.  So, what are the key advances that have been made so far in the 21st century?

GPS Satellite Navigation

It seems like an eternity ago that any road trip would involve careful analysis of enormous fold out maps. In the year 2000, GPS satellite navigation was integrated into automobiles and driving has never been the same since.

It is now very easy to reach your destination no matter where it is, as you simply input your final destination and the GPS system will direct you at every turn.

Rear View Backup Camera

Those that passed their test after the early 2000’s have never known the frustration of relying on your mirrors or getting a passenger to guide you as you reverse into a tight space thanks to the rear view backup camera.

This provides the driver with visibility for the area directly behind the car, making it easier to park and also spot small children or animals that would otherwise have been difficult to see.

Active Safety

The safety features in modern automobiles are remarkable and help to save lives (both pedestrians and motorists).

This includes fantastic features such as pedestrian detection, lane keeping assist, collision prevention assist and blind spot assist, which Robins & Day outlined as a key feature in the development of Citroen technology recently.

This superb technology is constantly being developed and will play an enormous role in the future of automobiles.

Self-Parking

Parking is often the part of driving which causes drivers the most stress and difficulty, which is why so many manufacturers have worked tirelessly to develop self-parking technology. This is available with some automobiles, but looks set to become a standard feature in the near future.

Infotainment

Your in-car entertainment is now much more advanced than a simple CD or even tape player that those who were driving in the 90’s remember. Smartphone integration, playing music from various sources, social media, the internet, controls for the temperature and much more is all readily available at your fingertips and no longer reserved for luxury automobiles.

These are just a few of the major advances that have occurred since 2000, but there are many more and this is certainly set to continue as technology continues to become such a crucial part of our daily lives.
