Transmitting big data volumes over the Web

Many sectors of industry and business need to transmit huge data volumes to and from external partners as well as internally, between various departments. Managing and transmitting these mountains of data can be a complicated and cost-intensive process. To leverage more than just financial benefits for the user, Atlas Products International Ltd. has developed a Web-based solution.

At CeBIT 2009 these UK-based developers will be demonstrating techniques to exchange significant volumes of data reliably and simply over the Internet. According to the manufacturer, this represents an ideal solution for banks, insurance companies, the automotive industry, the medical sector, the media and any enterprise involved in telecommunications, allowing them to free up corporate resources.

Rich cinematic experience on a notebook

Insert movie, lean back and enjoy: Featuring a wide-screen display, the new notebook from Packard Bell Deutschland GmbH delivers a genuine cinematic experience. The 15.6-inch screen deploying Diamond View Technology provides the optimum movie format, delivering a true 16.9 aspect ratio for wide-screen cinema without the annoying letterbox effect when watching Blu-Ray or DVD content.

The notebook on view at CeBIT 2009 makes a great stand-alone player when connected directly to a TV via the HDMI port. The grooved, tread-like texture of the cover not only lends a novel touch and feel, but also makes the notebook impervious to fingerprints. The backbone of the notebook is the new Intel Centrino 2  platform with Core 2 Duo processors complemented by an ATI Mobility Radeon 3430 graphics card optimized for HD content, Bluetooth and WLAN.

Compact mini-server for small offices

Small offices need small machines. The RAID mini-server system from A-TEC Subsystem INC. is specially designed to this end. Despite its compact size it delivers the power for servers running embedded Linux on DOM (Disk on Module). The server on show at CeBIT 2009 completely isolates data backup from the operating system. According to the manufacturer, this means significantly higher operating security compared with normal disk drive systems.

The mini-server system can be positioned between a modem and different networks. Taiwan-based A-TEC Subsystem INC claims the server is easy to install, configure and operate. The all-in-one server functionalities include e-mail, Web mail, proxy and Internet VPN servers as well as firewall and antivirus.

USB and eSATA, all in one

CeBIT premier for a new eSATA and USB combination: the newest development from Candy Technology Co. Ltd. in Taiwan unites the two connectivity technologies and exploits their individual benefits.

The eSATA port does not need an extra power supply because it draws its power from the USB port. The user simply plugs in the interface without the need for any further cabling.

The rapid route to your own multi-touch applications

A small gesture in front of the screen is all it takes and the car on the display rotates about its own axis, the athlete readies for the sprint and the virtual drum kit kicks in with a riff. Touch screens have become indispensable, enabling actions on a computer screen that are impossible to achieve with a keyboard and mouse. At CeBIT 2009 Fingertapps from New Zealand show will demonstrate how their software facilitates the development of your own multi-touch applications.

The platform offers Web content, video, 2D and 3D graphics and video content with natural touch-screen gestures. The portfolio from the New Zealand-based company includes a runtime engine, operating components such as an embedded Web browser, photo browsing, video playback and predefined interaction formats to accelerate the development of multi-touch and gesture-oriented user interfaces.

Web-based solutions for straightforward communication

Easy communication and collaboration are basic prerequisites for successful business process management (BPM). Software AG has developed a Web-based solution for interdepartmental process thinking and will be unveiling its social BPM platform at CeBIT 2009. This platform delivers social networking features similar to those of Facebook or Xing for the business community.

Depending on the individual customer's needs, the system is installable on corporate servers or at software-as-a-service providers. The solution makes the organization of interdepartmental processes more transparent, pulling the right people together in projects to create 'flowing' teams which can collaborate smoothly on BPM projects across corporate boundaries. Software AG brings Webciety to the enterprise, centralizing locally-based knowledge.

Innovative monitors in exclusive piano-lacquer look

Elegance and aesthetics at the workplace: the new Verfino series from AOC International (Europe) clearly demonstrates that functionality and design are not necessarily mutually exclusive. At CeBIT 2009 the company will be showing how 19 and 20-inch monitors from its subsidiary TPV unite innovative technology, energy-saving features and elegance.

The integrated navigation ring around the display makes it easy to adjust the settings. A 1.3 MP webcam and digital microphone ensure clarity of transmission for videoconferencing. The new WLED (White LED) technology delivers top performance and a high dynamic contrast ratio of 100.000:1 (DCR). Two high-quality loudspeakers and an HDMI input complete the features, qualifying the display for high-end personal and business use. The casing comes in a shiny black piano-lacquer look. According to the manufacturer, all units in the new series are manufactured to the RoHS guidelines and are extremely energy efficient. The packaging can be completely recycled.

USB port as charger for small AA batteries

A small, compact battery with USB interface makes charger units redundant. This new battery from Gembird GmbH in Soest, Germany, is simply and easily charged using a PC or notebook USB port. These AA-size batteries have a hinged crown which can be opened to access the USB port. No charger is needed to recharge the battery. Gembird will show how this works at CeBIT 2009.

To recharge the battery, you simply plug its USB port into a PC or notebook computer. These batteries are designed to take the place of conventional, non-rechargeable alkaline batteries, thus reducing the volume of e-waste and making mobile computing more environmentally friendly. Additional technical information cited by the manufacturer includes a 1.2 V power rating, 1,500 mAh capacity based on NiMH battery technology and a battery charge status indicator. Charging via the USB port takes up to five hours. The standard AA-size battery weighs 21 grams.

Soft awakening in an almost wakened state

Goodbye to eardrum-piercing alarms that tear us from our sleep every morning. A new sleep phase alarm clock works out the best time for gently waking its owner. Everyone passes through a number of sleep cycles in the course of a night's sleep - a succession of deep and shallow sleep phases. The sleep phase alarm clock from Simple Feature exploits the fact that each sleep state is identifiable through different movements of the body.

This patented alarm clock - on show at CeBIT 2009 - uses body movements to work out the sleep state and gently wake the sleeper up during a shallow sleep phase within 30 minutes of the desired wakeup time. According to the manufacturer, this encourages a gentle, smooth start to the day, enhancing one's sense of well-being and inducing higher productivity.
