Bavaria Beer Champ Car Grand Prix of Holland - Sunday race quotes

02.09.2007: Bavaria Beer Champ Car Grand Prix of Holland - Sunday race quotes

Justin Wilson #9 CDW Cosworth/DP01/Bridgestone (First) – "It’s a great result for the #9 CDW/RuSPORT team. I’ve got to thank the whole team – they’ve done brilliantly and they deserve this win so much. The pit-stops were good and my engineer Mike Talbott did a great job working out a set-up with no running in the warm-up.

It’s nice to get the win for CDW and to do it in front of our guests here from Plantronics Europe. It’s been fantastic to come back to Europe. The promoters for these two events have done a great job.

I was saying to the guys before the race that the circuit here is 2.8 miles long and the banking all around the track was full of fans. The crowd seemed to me as good, if not better, than any Formula 1 race I’ve been to."

Jan Heylen #34 Grafiprint Cosworth/DP01/Bridgestone (Second) – "We finally had everything work out for us after a rough start of the season. From the first session on Friday, we knew we had a fast car and we were really encouraged by all of our sessions leading up to the race because at each session we were getting better and learning more.

I’m very happy for the team and all of our guests from Grafiprint. The promoters have done an amazing job at both of these European events so I think both Zolder and Assen can be considered a great success."

Bruno Junqueira #19 Sonny’s Bar-B-Q Cosworth/DP01/Bridgestone (Third) – My car was pretty good today. Could save fuel and still go pretty fast. I did a good pace throughout the whole race, almost the entire time I was leading and I felt very good. I think the team did a good job.

Tristan Gommendy #22 Pay by Touch / MegaSpirea Cosworth/DP01/ Bridgestone (Fourth) – "Neel did a good start so I was in fourth place. The Pay By Touch MegaSpirea PKV Racing car was very quick when I was alone and I made good fuel mileage. But, it was very difficult to follow people because of the slipstream.

This is also a very hard track to overtake on. What makes me upset the most is that (Bruno) Junqueira used his push to pass several times to fight with me at the end of the race and it was forbidden. I don’t think that is fair.

The Pay By Touch MegaSpirea PKV Racing team did a good job all weekend. In the race I had a fantastic car. Fourth is not too bad, but I am disappointed because the podium was really close and I want to finish on the podium."

Neel Jani #21 Red Bull-Gulfstream Cosworth/DP01/Bridgestone (Fifth) – "I had quite a good start to the race in the Red Bull Gulfstream PKV Racing car and ended up in second place. The car was good and I think I was quicker than Wilson. We were also getting good fuel mileage. The first pit stop went well, but then I was following some cars into a corner when a cone got knocked into the air.

There were three pieces, the cone, a pole and a metal disc. I avoided the cone and the pole, but the metal disc got lodged in the chassis. A couple of laps later I was braking and the car bottomed on the disc, which was hanging down from the chassis, so I just went straight.

That is when we lost four positions. The car kept bottoming, which made it very hard to brake. At that point we tried a strategy move to try and win the race, but could not get the yellow, so during the last laps I really had to save fuel to make it.

I am disappointed because we lost at least a podium and possibly a win, but considering everything, fifth place is not bad."

Simon Pagenaud #15 Aussie Vineyards Cosworth/DP01/Bridgestone (Sixth) – "You know it’s a fantastic track, but we had to save fuel the whole race and to be honest it’s not that fun to drive when you have to save fuel. The upside is we got decent pace saving that much fuel and that is a pretty good thing for us.

I want to thank all of Team Australia, they did a fantastic job and gave me a great Aussie Vineyards car all weekend. We weren’t top three, but top six is good for us and it feels good to be in the top ten again.

I’m disappointed for Will, he had a good chance in the championship with this race and it didn’t end well for him. We are going to work hard and get a great pace for the Aussie fans for Australia."

Sebastien Bourdais #1 McDonalds Cosworth/DP01/Bridgestone (Seventh) – "We didn’t make a great start but it wasn’t the end of the day for the McDonald’s team because I think we would have got back by Justin on the lap because he made a pretty big mistake and slid off the race track coming off Turn 5 and I got on the overtake (Power to Pass) and the pit speed limiter went off.

He washed off the track and I was well underneath him on the line and made a pretty good exit and pressed the overtake button and the PLC (pit lane cruise) went off. I was a sitting duck and since it is a three-stage pit limiter you have to press three times and by the time I got that figured out I was way, way, way back. It’s just frustrating. It was a weird race; it never quite got going for us.

I felt like I was just a passenger; there really wasn’t much I could do. Every time we were pitting under yellow and despite our best efforts to save fuel I was not making any ground and if anything we lost a position on the first pit stop to Jan (Heylen) because we were the last pit box which is good when you are leading the race but when you are P6, one by one others peel off in front of you and every time you have to slow down a little bit.

We lost a position there and I just didn’t run a very good race. I got in the pits and I was not square in the box and I didn’t want to put too much revs but I didn’t put enough. Then when I threw the clutch the engine died and after that it takes forever to get the thing going again anyway so we were dead last.

It’s frustrating; had I not stalled we would have wrapped it (title) up. It’s as close as it’s going to get without clinching it I guess. Unless disaster strikes, we finish it by taking the start at the last two. It’s just too bad that I didn’t get it done today.

The McDonald’s team did a good job again this weekend and gave me a great car. I just failed them a little bit."

Oriol Servia #7 Indeck Cosworth/DP01/Bridgestone (Eighth) – "We did a great race and came out with a very average result. It was a great effort by the whole team. It is a track that I love from the driving point of view, but we just couldn’t get the rear end behind us, it would go loose in all the corners and here you loose a lot of time because of that.

Finally we got it right for the race which was great, we got the 4th fastest lap and still managed to save a lot of fuel. I think we could have done a lot better but we lost two positions when I pressed the Cosworth Power to Pass button and for some reason the pit speed limiter came on so we ended up loosing positions instead of gaining.

But anyway I’m happy that we improved the cars and that we worked well."

Graham Rahal #2 Medi | Zone Cosworth/DP01/Bridgestone (Ninth) – "We got a really good start and once we got by Sebastien and we were up to P4 (fourth place) and it was pretty good but I made too many mistakes. It was a bit of a mess for me this weekend between the practice sessions and the race.

Although the car was pretty good it was a little inconsistent with the brakes but we had the speed. At one point we had the fastest lap and it had to be pretty close to what ended up the fastest lap of the race. I think the braking really bit us today though because it was so inconsistent that it caused me to go off a couple of times which was frustrating because we really did have a good car.

A top five finish in the standings is our goal. We clearly have the pace to finish on the podium each weekend. We’ll try to put it together next race. The Medi | Zone team is getting better and better and learning each weekend. We can definitely win, it just needs to come our way."

Ryan Dalziel #28 Plain Jane Couture Cosworth/DP01/Bridgestone (10th)- "I am pretty happy with the race result. We struggled with the black tires this weekend but did a good job with the reds. We need to figure out how to qualify further up the grid.

It was a long, hard, green race but it was a clean race. I am happy to have finished back up in the top-ten in the Plain Jane Car, but we need to get more pace in the cars for qualifying and more pace overall."

Dan Clarke #4 Minardi Team USA Cosworth/DP01/Bridgestone (11th) - "The car was real good – it was like a spaceship! For me, the most positive thing to come out of this race is that I succeeded in getting the monkey of the last race off my back. I would like to thank Tony (Cotman) for giving me the chance to race here in Assen and prove to those people who had quite a bit to say after Zolder that, strategy permitting, we can be right there in terms of pace.

We may not have achieved the result we would have liked today, but I take great pleasure from our performance, and from the fact we set the fastest lap of the race.

The No 4 crew has done a wonderful job over the two weeks of this Champ Car European Tour, and even pulled an all-nighter to ensure our car was in the best possible shape for today’s race, so I would like to say a really special thank you to them for all their efforts. I’m definitely coming away from these two races a wiser and stronger person."

Katherine Legge #11 Dale Coyne Racing Cosworth/DP01/Bridgestone (12th) – "It was an unfortunate race for us today because we had a fast car today and I drove a good race. It was unlucky for us to get the result that we did because we definitely deserved to finish better than we did.

I was overtaken a few times by drivers using push-to-pass when we weren't supposed to be using it. The team did a great job again this weekend. Now we have a few weeks off to get ready for Australia."

Robert Doornbos #14 Team Minardi USA Cosworth/DP01/Bridgestone (13th) - "It’s been a great weekend, Bart (Rietbergen) and everyone did an amazing job. We proved once again why fans should watch Champ Car. We’ve had a great run for the Championship this year, and have had some great races.

We struggled a bit here at Assen and the way the race played out, it just didn’t work out for us. I am happy so many fans came out to support me and we’ll look toward making back up points in Australia and Mexico."

Will Power #5 Aussie Vineyards Cosworth/DP01/Bridgestone (14th) – "Well it was a very disappointing weekend overall for us. We were running well in the race and had a great Aussie Vineyards car, but unfortunately came across some bad luck.

After our third pit stop it really went downhill from there. That’s racing. The boys did a great job. Now we move on and gear up for Australia. I’m ready to go home and give them a great show."

Alex Tagliani #8 Rocketsports Cosworth/DP01/Bridgestone (15th) – "At the start, we got into the corner and there were a lot of people in and out. People were trying really hard and Paul (Tracy) was very aggressive. He spun, Bruno (Junqueira) spun, and I was in the middle of it.

From that I hit Bruno in the hairpin and we damaged the front of the car. From that point on the #8 Rocketsports car was not very good. It felt crooked and it was just a tough day for us."

Alex Figge #29 Plain Jane Couture Cosworth/DP01/Bridgestone (16th) - "It was a long day for us. We were five gallons short of fuel every stint because we were not picking up all the fuel we could. It felt like I was constantly in the pits.

We need to work on our pace, having a problem-free weekend and we need to continue to work on developing the car. The stretch for us between now and Australia won’t be a break that is for sure, we are testing in Sebring in a few weeks and we’ve got a lot of work to do to continue our development.

This event was incredible, it was an honor to compete in Plain Jane Couture car in front of so many excited and knowledgeable fans. Champ Car is a big deal here in Holland, we learned that today for sure!"

Paul Tracy #3 Indeck Cosworth/DP01/Bridgestone (17th) – "I guess that was a fitting end to a very bad weekend. The bad luck we’ve had all year came with us to Europe. I made a great start, I think I passed almost ten cars on the first couple of corners. I went inside to pass (Robert) Doornbos and he just closed the door on me and I had to slam on the brakes to avoid him, the rear end came around and I spun into the gravel and got stuck.

So after that we were just running around a lap down until something happened with the gearbox and our day was over.

We didn’t have a good result but overall I think these European events were a huge success for Champ Car, it’s a great feeling going around the track and seeing all the grandstands absolutely packed."
