Clapham North scores solid result in Britain's largest motor race with Ecurie Celtique

The Clapham North MOT-sponsored Ecurie Celtique team enjoyed a hugely successful maiden outing in the C1 Racing Club Silverstone 24 Hours, which was marked as the largest grid in British motorsport history, finishing 18th out of the 99 entries.

As the team assembled for its first ever race, the #474 Citroen C1 machine was doused in the distinctive colour scheme of the London-based historic garage, which qualified 17th out of 99 cars, despite track conditions worsening as the 90-minute session progressed.

Experience motorsport engineer Steve James took the start of the 24-hour event and showed great speed in his first race before handing over to Dunlop engineer and former Rotax Max Kart competitor Dave Meenan, who is also one of the team’s founders.

At the four-hour mark Clapham North owner George Grant took the wheel, just as the rain began to come down. The seasoned Mazda MX-5 racer used his experience to guide the car through the chaos as the varying conditions and low grip caused mayhem around the 5.141 km-long Grand Prix venue.

Team manager and Formula 1 engineer James Lyons Jr. embraced the worst of the weather at the mid-way mark, but as the race unfolded the team rose to challenge for the top 10 during Grant’s second stint.

In the latter stages of the race they overcame an engine cut-out issue and an unfortunate penalty to score a top-20 finish in 18th, which was a fine gift as Clapham North approaches its 60th birthday.

Following a triumphant debut, Grant will be taking part in the Ecurie Celtique team’s home round at Pembrey for two six-hour races on 8-9 June. Clapham North will also continue its partnership with the BRSCC’s MX-5 Super Series and SuperCup championships, with the garage branding being used on the podium backdrop of each event in 2019.

George Grant, Clapham North MOT owner, said: “For a team that didn’t exist until the middle of last year we’ve had a fantastic first race. Great teams are made up of great individuals, and we certainly had that going for us. I would have been happy with a top 50, I certainly didn’t expect us to be challenging the top 10. It was absolute chaos in the race, especially when it started chucking it down during my stint but we kept it clean and scored a mega result. I’ve caught the bug a bit now so I can’t wait to get back in the car for Pembrey.”

James Lyons Jr., Ecurie Celtique team manager, said: “Our first race was quite an experience. We came into it as well as we could do for a group of drivers and pit crew that hadn’t done a race before. Although it was a bit of a baptism of fire, we did some good testing so the guys knew their way around and we knew where to improve.

It was pretty hectic with a lot of safety cars while there’s sideways rain coming at you and your wipers are on full chat, but we were aware of what was going on around us, even though there’s no pit-to-car radio so you have to work out who you’re actually racing. I think a top 10 was possible at a push, but 18th is way above our expectations and we’re delighted to have George back onboard for Pembrey. My thanks to Clapham North MOT for their services and sponsorship.”

Coming Home has the full support of Bryn Parry, the co-founder of Help for Heroes: "Our task is to fix up these brave young men and women so that they are capable of leading the rest of their lives. That’s where Coming Home comes in, by providing them somewhere appropriate and decent to live."

Coming Home takes over where Help for Heroes finishes:

Haig Housing is one of two strategic partners of Help for Heroes.Through this partnership, Help for Heroes highlights cases that require specially adapted housing and refer them to us as the specialists in housing for Service and ex-Service people. Specially adapted homes cost £150,000 to £300,000, depending on location.

Many badly injured ex-Servicemen have already been provided with a home for life through Haig Housing Trust and the Coming Home campaign. Read their stories and see how your donation will make a huge contribution to people’s lives.
