Sordo quickest at Cyprus Rally Shakedown

12.03.2009: Spaniard Dani Sordo was the fastest driver at this morningís pre-event Shakedown test for the Cyprus Rally. Shakedown took place on a 3.35km test road located at Listovounos, 16km from the rally base in Limassol.

Spaniard Dani Sordo was the fastest driver at this morning’s pre-event Shakedown test for the Cyprus Rally.

Shakedown took place on a 3.35km test road located at Listovounos, 16km from the rally base in Limassol.

The stage was asphalt, in common with the first day’s competition, but drivers tackled it on the same hard-compound gravel tyres they will use for the whole event. Weather conditions were dry throughout the session with clear skies and a temperature of 19°C.

Sordo made four passes through the stage in his Citroen C4 WRC, recording a best time of 3min 33.0sec on his second attempt.

“Yeah, it’s a good time,” acknowledged Sordo. “It’s still not ideal driving on tarmac with gravel tyres but it was useful to get used to the feeling and work on the set-up. Now I’ve got some good confidence with the car. It feels very good and that’s the most important thing.”

Sordo said the shakedown road had more gravel on it than most of Friday’s route but was still a representative test. “It was most like Friday’s second and third stages which resemble the roads of Corsica and Catalunya,” explained Sordo. “But the first one tomorrow is smooth, wide and fast - it’s just like my home rally in Catalunya. It’s incredible.”

Petter Solberg set the second fastest time in his Citroen Xsara. The Norwegian’s car had been fitted with a new engine since Rally Norway and he was delighted with its performance. “It’s really great fun to drive,” he said. “I’m especially pleased I got the time later in the session when there was more gravel on the road.”

Citroen Junior Team driver Sebastien Ogier was third fastest.
