02.01.2012: DAKAR 2012 - Argentina/Chile 15:25 - bike 070 - Manuel Jamett drops out

DAKAR 2012   - Argentina/Chile

15:25 - bike 070 - Manuel Jamett drops out

The biker crashed on the special stage after 206 kilometres and is being looked after by the rally organiser's teams. He has fractured his toes and has decided to withdraw from the race.

14:49 - bike The state of play in the bike category

By winning the day's stage between Santa Rosa de la Pampa and San Rafael, Spaniard Marc Coma (KTM) also took command of the general standings in front of his team-mate, Frenchman Cyril Desprès, who got his tactics right by only having to start in thirteenth place today. One minute and eighteen seconds separate the two men.

One of the day's best performances goes to Joan Barreda Bort (SPA) on his Husqvarna, with third place, 2'33 ahead of the first general standings leader on the Dakar 2012, Chilean Francisco Lopez, who is now fourth, 2'44 behind.

Polish rider Kuba Przygonski (KTM) is 4'17 behind the leader in fifth place and Frenchman David Casteu (Yamaha) is 7'14 behind in sixth position. In seventh place, Norwegian Pal Ullevalseter (KTM) is now 9'11 behind, 14 seconds ahead of Argentinean Pizzolito (Honda), who in turn leads Frenchman Alain Duclos (Aprilia) by two seconds.

The final rider in the Top 10 is Spaniardg Juan Pedrero Garcia (KTM), 9'35 behind his countryman, leader Marc Coma.

14:29 - bike 019 - Mechanical problems for Jonah Street

The American has ground to a halt after 234 km and has signalled that he cannot repair his Yamaha alone. It looks likely that he may have to abandon the race…

14:23 - bike Cody and Faria left by the wayside...

American Quinn Cody, wearing number 9 (Honda) and Portuguese rider Ruben Faria on KTM No. 8 have lost a lot of time on the special (they were reported to have stopped for several minutes earlier in the day). Faria lost more than 13 minutes on the race leader and Cody say almost 20 of them slip away. Both riders may have encountered technical problems to be identified later… Watch this space…

14:14 - bike 002 - Second best time for Desprès!

Frenchman Cyril Desprès (KTM) has just crossed the finishing line and has put in the second best time behind his team-mate Marc Coma and in front of Barreda (Husqvarna) and Lopez (Aprilia).

With a time of 3:08'39', he has lost a further 1 minute 18 seconds to the day's winner, but has beaten many of his main rivals in the motorbike general standings. What's more, David Casteu (FRA) on his Yamaha has roared in with a fine sixth-placed finish.

14:09 - bike 023 - All change behind Coma!

There is change afoot in the standings behind the day's provisional leader Marc Coma. At the handlebars of his KTM, the Spaniard picked up the best time on the special in 3:07'21”.

His countryman Joan Barreda (Husqvarna) grabbed second place from under the nose of Chilean Francisco Lopez on his Aprilia (only 9 seconds separate the two men). In fourth place, Kuba Przygonski on his KTM is the current occupier, ahead of the surprise package of the first stage, Argentinean Javier Pizzolito.

13:55 - bike 001 - Coma finishes ahead of Lopez!

At the finish of the special stage, Marc Coma crossed the line to complete the 295-km long route in 3:07'21 with a lead of 2 minutes and 44 seconds over Francisco Lopez, who was leader at the end of the first day. Only the first two bikers to hit the tracks have finished so far, so watch this space…

13:08 - bike 009 - Cody Quinn at a standstill on the special stage…

The American was at a standstill the special stage, near the 222 kilometre marker, approximately 70 kilometres from the finish, but has set off again after several minutes and is continuing to the finishing line.

12:10 - bike 002 - Desprès leads at CP1!

The French KTM rider has just accomplished a major feat on this second special stage of the Dakar 2012, at CP1 located near the midway point, where he has put in the best provisional time of 1:05'46”, 9 seconds ahead of Marc Coma (KTM) who in turn leads Francisco Lopez (Aprilia) by 8 seconds. Desprès started in 13th place this morning, most likely to avoid opening the road today, unlike his main rivals.

12:06 - bike Heating up behind Coma and Lopez!

The pace is so fast on the first part of this special that the helicopters are only just managing to follow the bikers, who are regularly hitting 160 kmph.

Behind Marc Coma, who is still in the lead with a time of 1:05'55”, and Francisco Lopez still second, American Quinn Cody has recorded a time of 1:07'20” and is in provisional third place, 1'25 behind the day's leader. Argentinean Javier Pizzolito is not having a day to remember so far, 4 minutes behind the leader and slipping down the provisional standings as a consequence.

The story is completely different from the man from Nice, David Casteu, who for the moment holds fourth place, 1'53 behind Coma. Number 23 Joan Barreda (SPA) is also fighting back strongly, climbing to fifth place ahead of Polish rider Kuba Przygonski. The competitors are currently at the supply point, before the starting the second half of this 295-km long special stage.

11:52 - bike 001 - Coma quicker than Lopez!

The first two riders have just reached the midway point of the special stage. Marc Coma has put in the best time at CP1, with 1:05'55”, 8 seconds ahead of Francisco Lopez.

A mere 8 seconds over the first 140 kilometres just goes to show how intense the struggle is out there on the tracks! The competitors will soon be entering the winding and more physically demanding bumpy part of the special.

11:09 - bike 008 - A problem for Faria?

Portugal and Team Red Bull KTM's Ruben Faria stopped for several minutes on the special stage, approximately 4 kilometres after the start for an unknown reason.

He returned to the race tracks however, and has carried on at normal pace in this section ridden at a top speed of between 150 and 160 kilometres per hour by all of the leading competitors in the bike category.

11:05 - bike 004 - The bikes start the special stage.

A few kilometres away from La Humada, a small settlement with a population of a little less than one thousand in the Pampa province, the first bikes have entered the timed section that will make up the lion's share of this second day on the Dakar 2012.

Francisco "Chaleco" Lopez, the leader of the standings in this category, is opening the road for the 295 kilometres that start with a fast and wide section, before becoming more tricky and rocky after 170 kilometres. The end of the special is more winding and bumpy, before crossing some sandy zones in the last third that leads up to the finishing line at Nihuil.

Behind “Chaleco” (Aprilia), amongst the 177 bikes still in the race, in racing order, Spaniard Marc Coma (KTM), Argentinean Javier Pizzolito (Honda) and American Quinn Cody (Honda) will be the next riders on the tracks. David Casteu (Yamaha) will be eighth to start and Norwegian Ullevalseter (KTM) tenth. The other official KTM rider, Frenchman Cyril Desprès, will start from thirteenth position.

07:20 - bike  004 - The bikes get things started.

At 5 AM on the shores of the Laguna Don Tomas, Chilean Francisco Lopez (Aprilia) was the first to get to grips with this second day of the Dakar 2012. As winner of the first stage, he will be opening the road this Monday, in front of the KTM of Marc Coma (ESP) and the Honda of Javier Pizzolito (ARG). On the programme: a link stage of 403 kilometres before tackling the 290 km of specials stage, which will start for the bikes at 10.30 AM local time.

15:19  The Sierra Nevada towers above the horizon

Now that they are the first leaders of the 2012 Dakar, Francisco López (Aprilia), Leonid Novitskiy (Mini), Sergio de la Fuente (Yamaha) and Marcel Van Vliet (Man) will face the second stage between Santa Rosa de la Pampa and San Rafael in Argentina with the additional challenge of trying to stay at the top.

The stage comprises 487 kilometres of liaison sectors, 290 special kilometres for cars and 295 special kilometres for the other categories. The first motorcycle will set off in the early morning (5:00 am local time), followed by the first car at 6:49 am and the first truck at 9:11 am.

The pace required on the extremely fast first half of the route will force pilots to stay highly focused upon approaching the Sierra Nevada. After a series of wide, fast turns on hard terrain, their entrance to a landscape of dunes will slow them down substantially. Now in view of the finish, the sands in El Nihuil have grey hues, the result of intense volcanic activity in this region thousands of years ago.
