The Dakar World Tour has stopped off in Santiago de Chile, where the finish of the 2013 edition will take place, and thrills were already in evidence…
The headland that plays host to the Castillo Hidalgo castle offers the finest view of Santiago. You can almost feel the presence of pioneers like Pedro de Valdivia, the founder of the city in 1541. Today, this majestic setting hosted the presentation of the Chilean section of the Dakar 2013, which will indeed finish for the first time in the country’s capital.
Loyal to the event since its arrival in South America, Chile expressed the thrill it felt about hosting the finish of the rally by the intermediary of Gabriel Ruiz Tagle, Secretary of State for Sport, and the Head of the Santiago metropolitan region, Cecilia Perez: “For Chile, welcoming the adventurers of the desert opposite the Palacio de la Moneda palace will be a historical event. We are expecting more than one million people to come and watch them enter the city”.
Amongst the most interested of the 200 guests at the Castillo Hidalgo, the Chilean competitors who will be battling it out on the tracks next January will be making it a point of principle to reach Santiago in the best conditions.
Boris Garafulic, who finished 11th on the last edition, has set the bar very high for this prestigious finish: “This time, I’ll be aiming for the Top 5”. This will be the strict minimum that Chile’s flag-bearer on the Dakar will be imposing on himself:
Francisco Lopez, who is currently involved in the Rally of Qatar for his brand new team, Bordone-Ferrari, was not able to attend today, but the opportunity of improving on his 3rd place obtained in 2010 is surely amongst his plans.
