Hannover. The first prizes in the contractworld.award 2008 have gone to entrants from France, Spain, Switzerland and the United Kingdom. This coveted international architecture award was presented to the winners at a formal prize-giving ceremony in Hannover on 12 January 2008.
Numerous top architectural and interior design offices had submitted their projects in the hope of winning Europe's most important architecture prize for innovative work in interior design. A total of 366 projects were entered in the competition, including 174 from outside Germany. The jury chairman, Professor Dietmar Eberle from Lochau in Austria, commented: "What I value most about the contractworld.award is the sheer breadth and diversity of high-quality international projects.
In particular the award is a great opportunity for younger colleagues to get their work seen by a much broader public. At the contractworld.congress I have a chance to see old friends, as well as getting to know new colleagues I've always wanted to meet - and all this in stimulating surroundings, where I can quickly catch up on what's happening in the world of architecture today. And the contractworld.exhibition gives me instant access to interesting information about new materials and innovative products for the interior designer."
Two special awards were presented for the first time this year. These are intended exclusively for "new generation" entrants (architects/interior designers under the age of 40). Young contenders from Switzerland and Germany received awards in this category for their innovative, avant-garde projects.
Now in its eighth year, the contractworld.award 2008 is Europe's most lucrative award for innovative interior design concepts, inolving a total of 50,000 euros in prize money. Fourteen prizes were awarded in all, including two special awards.
The jury appraised innovative interior design concepts in four categories, looking for evidence of quality, functionality and aesthetic value, and rating their innovative treatment of space, materials, colour and surface texture or finish. In addition to the three established categories - "Offices", "Hotels" and "Shop" - contestants were also invited to submit entries in the special fourth category, "Education/Training/Culture".
The first prize in the category "Offices/Administration buildings" goes to Christian Pottgiesser from France for his project "The table through the forest", a 19th century factory hall that first of all had to be completely restored back to its original state. In the category "Hotels/Spas/Catering facilities" the first place goes to RCR ARANDA PIGEM VILALTA ARQUITECTES from Spain for their "Pavilions in Les Cols Restaurant".
The "Freitag Flagship Store" by spillmann echsle architekten eth sia from Switzerland carried off the first prize in the category "Shops/Showrooms/Exhibition stands". And the first prize in the category "Education/Training/Culture" is awarded to the London office 6a Architects for their project "Hairywood".
The distinguished international jury consists of Chairman Professor Dietmar Eberle (Austria), Professor Julia Bolles-Wilson (Germany), Professor Petra Kahlfeldt (Germany), Andreas Ruby (Germany), Professor Hrvoje Njiric (Croatia), Rob Wagemans (Netherlands) and Mirko van Den Winkel (Italy).
All the prize-winning projects will be showcased in a special exhibition that forms part of contractworld in Hall 4. They will also be documented at length in a glossy publication published after the show.
The contractworld concept itself - combining an exhibition and congress with a prestigious architecture prize - has worked well from the outset, proving more and more popular with visiting professionals each year. The event delivers a fascinating mix of architectural discoveries and product information, together with opportunities for meeting fellow professionals and comparing notes.
The contractworld.congress is now the largest annual architectural convention in Europe. With its extensive program of lectures, seminars and conferences based around the themes "Offices, Hotels, Shops and Education/Training/Culture", it is the forum of choice for intensive exchanges with fellow professionals from around the world - including such renowned figures as Professor Daniel Libeskind (USA), Professor Stephan Braunfels of Stephan Braunfels Architekten BDA (Germany), Alejandro Zaera Polo of Foreign Office Architects (FOA) (GB), Eric Owen Moss of Eric Owen Moss Architects, Culver City (USA) and Sergej Tchoban of nps tchoban voss GbR Architekten BDA (Germany).
In the exhibition section of contractworld big-name international manufacturers will be presenting floor coverings and interior furnishing products aimed at the contracting market. Here visitors will be able to see the latest products and trends, concepts and new materials, with a wealth of background information and opportunities for discussion.
