On Friday evening the annual awards ceremony, which marked the end of the 2006 season in Danish motor racing, was held in Copenhagen, and several drivers from the Danish Touringcar Championship went on stage to collect their trophies and medals following their successes this year. But some of the drivers entered the stage more than once.
One of these drivers was Casper Elgaard, for whom the annual awards ceremony turned out to be the culmination of a season that saw him win his third gold medal in front of fellow BMW 320si E90 drivers Jan Magnussen and John Nielsen. He had barely left the stage, before being asked to return to it again to collect the trophy as Danish Racing Driver 2006.
The accolade has been award every year since 1994, and it is the most prestigious award that the Danish ASN, Dansk Automobil Sports Union, can honour one of its drivers with.
"For every year and every season it has become more and more difficult to find the driver who shall be Danish Racing Driver 2006, simply because we do have so many good racing drivers in Denmark, but you Casper is a very worthy recipient of the prize," chairman of Dansk Automobil Sports Union, Morten Bach Andersen said in his speech to Casper Elgaard.
His rival for this year’s Danish Touringcar Championship, Jan Magnussen, also had to visit the stage twice. Apart from collecting his silver medal he was also awarded the Höltzer Trophy, which is the oldest trophy in Danish motor racing as it dates back till 1914.
Team owner Peter Halvorsen collected the trophy for Team Essex’ win in the teams’ championship, while Philip Andersen, Michael Outzen and Martin Pedersen also received the trophies for taking the top three positions in the privateers’ cup.

At the awards ceremony three youngsters were named talents of the year. Kasper Nymann Andersen took the prize in rallying, while the prizes in the karting and racing categories where both given to sons of famous names. The recipient in the karting category was Kevin Magnussen, son of Jan Magnussen, while the son of former DTM champion Kurt Thiim, Nicki Thiim, took the racing accolade for having won the Danish Formula Ford Championship.
