Women's Healthcare event opens with free health checks

Scores of women in the UAE are taking advantage of free health screenings and checks at Women's Healthcare, running until Saturday 26 April at the Dubai International Exhibition Centre
Scores of visitors to this week's Women's Healthcare exhibition are taking advantage of free screenings and health tests provided by exhibitors at the only dedicated health event for women in the UAE.
Women's Healthcare has been launched this year to raise awareness of vital health issues for female UAE residents. While a range of health and wellbeing products and services are on offer – from cosmetic surgery advice to nutrition, the exhibition is also giving focus to life threatening illnesses which are particularly prevalent in the UAE, such as cardiovascular disease, osteoporosis and diabetes.
Being held at Zabeel Hall at the Dubai International Exhibition Centre, Women's Healthcare is decked out with the latest health testing equipment where women can get their blood pressure checked and their body mass index confirmed, both of which are indicators for cardiovascular disease.
Other tests, such as checking blood sugar levels and bone mineral density, have proved to be popular with visitors wishing to screen for diabetes and osteoporosis, as well as the mammogram mobile screening unit brought in by Tawam Hospital.
Women's Healthcare comes at a time when knowing about health risks specific to women is becoming more important, especially in relation to women's growing role as the chief healthcare decision makers of the family. Recent research by the organizers of the exhibition, IIR Middle East, revealed that female UAE residents are not overly aware of major health risks, such as cardiovascular disease, with which more than a third of women worldwide currently live.
To help increase awareness of cardiovascular disease among women, Women's Healthcare and the Emirates Cardiac Society has launched the "Go Red for Women" campaign at the exhibition. Part of a global project, "Go Red for Women" aims to change the misconception that heart disease is a 'man's illness'.
Aiding the cause, Salim Asgarally, one of India's leading fashion designers, dedicated his catwalk show to the "Go Red for Women" campaign. By doing so, he is helping to draw attention to the preventable disease at The Bride Show Dubai, which runs alongside Women's Healthcare.
"We are happy to see women in the UAE being proactive about their health," said Sietske Meerloo, Marketing Manager of Women's Healthcare. "This exhibition provides a safe and private atmosphere for women to take control of their wellbeing and to learn about prevention and diagnosis; lessons that can save lives.
"To raise awareness and empower women, personal health checkups are available at Women's Healthcare for free, with qualified healthcare professionals at hand to discuss what the results mean and what the next steps should be, an aspect of healthcare that is very important to women."
In addition to testing their health, visitors have the opportunity to meet a wide range of healthcare professionals and specialists from acupuncturists to representatives from private hospitals. Dental clinics are available to discuss both cosmetic and medical procedures and women can consult cosmetic surgery facilities about their services and what elective treatments would suit them.
To help address a myriad of health risks specific to women, Women's Healthcare features seminars by industry experts speaking about topical health issues, such as Dubai Health Authority's discussion tomorrow on preventing and treating diabetes or NMC Hospital's talk on beating obesity on Saturday.
Women's Healthcare runs alongside Al Bayt Al Arabie, the UAE's only Arabian home show, and The Bride Show Dubai, the largest bridal event in the Middle East. All three exhibitions take place daily until Saturday 26th April 2008 in Zabeel Hall and Halls 1 and 2, Dubai International Exhibition Centre, open to the public from 2.30pm-10.30pm.
