ERC Junior quotes ahead of PZM 76th Rally Poland

Mattias Adielsson (SWE) ERC1 Junior
Co-driver: Andreas Johansson (SWE) Team: Sweden National Team Car: Citroën C3 R5

“It will be great to do this rally. I saw the stages from the World Rally Championship before but I’ve never been there before so it will be a new experience. They are really fast roads, some nice jumps, kind of my type of road. I enjoyed Latvia very much.

Hopefully we will have a better start position this time and we will see how competitive we can be. We are aiming for a podium in ERC Junior of course and it would be nice to do it on this rally because it’s similar to the rallies we have in Sweden. It will be great to be back in a four-wheel-drive car because I did a small rally in a two-wheel-drive car one week ago.”

Hiroki Arai (JPN) ERC1 Junior
Co-driver: Ilka Minor (AUT) Team: STARD Car: Citroën C3 R5

“It’s a new rally for me, I’ve never been to Poland before. I know the stages have a soft surface and it’s high speed, which I like. I think a top-five [overall] finish is possible but I’m also doing this rally to gather data for Yokohama. In Latvia the tyres were working really well in the dry conditions so we hope we have similar weather in Poland and we can be competitive. I know my father [Toshi] did this rally [in 2013] but I have not asked him for any advice!”

Chris Ingram (GBR) ERC1 Junior
Co-driver: Ross Whittock (GBR) Team: Toksport WRT Car: ŠKODA Fabia R5

“Rally Poland is a rollercoaster on steroids, the stages are a real thrill for the drivers with high speeds and huge jumps. And it’s great that Jari Huttunen is competing. When we were team-mates at Opel [in ERC3 Junior in 2017] I won three rallies to his one and won the title, but here he has nothing to lose and I absolutely must win the ERC1 Junior title prize. That’s our main goal of the season.

Then it’s to continue on to Rally di Roma Capitale without the huge pressure of having to finish at all costs, but show my true speed and fight for the overall title in the second half of the season. I have been under immense pressure with budget issues, but I am incredibly grateful to Toksport WRT and my partners Michelin Motorsport and CarFinance247 for keeping the faith in me. I am confident that once I seal the ERC1 Junior title I will be in a stronger position to find support for my ambition of winning the overall title and being the first Brit in 50 years to do so.”

Miko Marczyk (POL) ERC1 Junior
Co-driver: Szymon Gospadarczyk (POL) Team: ŠKODA Polska Motorsport Car: ŠKODA Fabia R5

“Of course, the priority is the Polish championship and with double points on Rally Poland it’s really important to be at the finish and be in the game. But I don’t want to think a lot about the points. I would like to have fun and be the best version of me as a driver that I can. Rally Poland last year was only my second event on gravel and I’ve not driven on gravel since then. We were six seconds in front of Łukasz Habaj and Daniel Dymurski. They made progress and now they are leading the ERC championship and I am really happy about that.

Last year [current ERC1 Junior leader] Chris Ingram was 0.3s per kilometre faster than us so it will be good to see the difference this time. The competition in the ERC is really high, but I hope I can use my knowledge and experience of last year to be a little more competitive and fight closer with the ERC guys. But I also need to stay calm, drive at my pace and not be over-pushing from the start.”

Filip Mareš (CZE) ERC1 Junior
Co-driver: Jan Hloušek (CZE) Team: ACCR Czech Rally Team Car: ŠKODA Fabia R5

“Rally Poland in 2018 was my very first event on gravel with an R5 car. Now we are coming back, still with not so much experience on gravel but generally much stronger in our Fabia. We are having quite a good season so far, we won Rally Hustopeče [recently] and we even lead the Czech championship now.

Based on this we have a plan with my team: to continue on this pace, doing all the things as good as we can and enjoy the whole rally. I am sure we can be competitive than ever on gravel. The upcoming rallies seem to be crucial to our further plans in ERC as well. It’s going to be tough, but we are really looking forward to the competition.”

Pedro Antunes (PRT) ERC3 Junior
Co-driver: Paulo Lopes (PRT) Team: FPAK Portugal Team ERC Car: Peugeot 208 R2

“We get back to driving the Peugeot on this event after doing the last rally in the Ford Fiesta. But although we know the car this time, we don’t know the rally. I understand it’s similar to Rally Liepāja in that it is high speed, on gravel. Again, we want to enjoy the stages and try to fight as much as we can to achieve a podium. I know it will be a hard fight and it’s also going to be harder because I won’t get to test before the rally. My first time on these stages will be in Free Practice.”

Erik Cais (CZE) ERC3 Junior
Co-driver: Jindřiška ˇáková (CZE) Team: ACCR Czech Rally Team Car: Ford Fiesta R2T

“I am expecting really fast and narrow stages and that’s going to make for a really difficult rally. My main objective is not to destroy the car like I did on Rally Liepāja, which was really horrible. It wasn’t good for our budget because we damaged two cars and it also wasn’t good for my head. I’m thinking it’s going to be difficult to get my focus back on the rally but that is what we will do. I am looking at this rally like being at school – I need to learn and get the experience but then go on full throttle when I come back next year.”

Sindre Furuseth (NOR) ERC3 Junior
Co-driver: Jim Hjerpe (SWE) Team: Saintéloc Junior Team Car: Peugeot 208 R2

“I don't really know what to expect. I don't know the rally, but I know the road characteristics should suit us well. It's all about making the most out of the testing and the recce, and from there my goal is to continue in the pace we have had on the last couple of rallies, without making mistakes. That should put us in the fight for the win. I can't wait to get started.”

Miika Hokkanen (FIN) ERC3 Junior
Co-driver: Rami Suorsa (FIN) Team: Mavisa Sport Car: Peugeot 208 R2

“I start every race trying to get as good results as possible. After the problems we had on the first day in Latvia I was happy with my speed on the second day, but this is a new race and we know that the competition is high. I really like the stages around Mikołajki. They are very beautiful, a bit more narrow in some places than what you have in Latvia, but very enjoyable. I will have a test before the rally so hopefully I will be able to find a good set-up.”

Gregor Jeets (EST) ERC3 Junior
Co-driver: Kuldar Sikk (EST) Team: Estonian Autosport Junior Team Car: Ford Fiesta R2T

“I’ve watched some videos with my father [Raul Jeets] and they look quite like what we have in Estonia and these kinds of roads can be good for me. I did the latest round of the Estonian championship last weekend. It was good practice and I was on the pace until we lost third gear and had to retire.”

Efrén Llarena (ESP) ERC3 Junior
Co-driver: Sara Fernández (ESP) Team: Rally Team Spain Car: Peugeot 208 R2

“We try to take the win to make a big step forward for the championship, but we know it’s going to be very difficult because there are a lot of other fast drivers in ERC Junior. Also, we see a lot of the stages are different from last year when we finished second behind Tom Kristensson. Last year we did our best to catch him. We lost a few seconds in the beginning but in the end we had a very good pace and we were catching him second by second. In the end it was not enough but I hope we can be even faster this year.”

Elias Lundberg (SWE) ERC3 Junior
Co-driver: David Arhusiander (SWE) Team: ADAC Opel Rallye Junior Team Car: Opel ADAM R2

“After a tough first half of the season we are hoping for a more trouble-free second half. Because this is what it takes to be successful in this highly competitive championship. Little problems, little mistakes, high speed – that’s the simple key, otherwise you won’t win anything in the FIA ERC3 Junior Championship. We have no experience from Poland so we will try to learn as much as possible as quickly as possible together with our ADAC Opel Rallye Junior Team and hopefully the sandy stages in Poland will suit us.”

Grégoire Munster (BEL) ERC3 Junior
Co-driver: Louis Louka (BEL) Team: ADAC Opel Rallye Junior Team Car: Opel ADAM R2

“We managed to steadily increase our pace on gravel throughout the last rally in Latvia, which was quite encouraging. Unfortunately, I did a small mistake then and had to retire. Meanwhile my co-driver Louis and I had a successful experience winning our class at the ADAC Rallye Stemweder Berg in Germany in an Opel ADAM Cup. So the goal is to transfer the momentum to Poland and into our ADAM R2, continue to progress on gravel and set some good times on the board. The boys from the ADAC Opel Rallye Junior Team will do all they can to support us in aiming for this goal.”

Steve Røkland (NOR) ERC3 Junior
Co-driver: Marius Fuglerud (NOR) Team: Steve Røkland Motorsport Car: Peugeot 208 R2

“We will have a proper test in Poland on Tuesday and after the pace we had in Latvia, the only goal is to fight for the win. This is the first time I am doing a rally in Poland, but I did the recce in 2017.”

Roman Schwedt (DEU) ERC3 Junior
Co-driver: Lina Meter (DEU) Team: Team ROMO Car: Peugeot 208 R2

“I have a really good feeling for the rally after Liepāja and I have a really good feeling on gravel with the car. I want to make some good stage times and get another good finish. I’ve seen some footage of the rally, it’s got some jumps and there are some crazy-narrow roads. It looks like it’s more sandy than Liepāja but I’m looking forward to it.”

Petr Semerád (CZE) ERC3 Junior
Co-driver: Jiří Hlávka (CZE) Team: ACCR Czech Rally Team Car: Peugeot 208 R2

“I’ve seen some footage from previous years and the characteristics are going to make it a very fast and challenging rally. I had a crash on my last rally in Czech Republic [driving an Opel ADAM R2] and I am not sure if we will be able to start in Poland unfortunately. The crash was pretty bad. There was a concrete [block] to stop you from cutting corners. A car in front had pulled it out into the middle of the road and nobody put it back. We arrived in fifth gear and we had no choice other than to go in a ditch where we rolled several times.”

Jan Talaš (CZE) ERC3 Junior
Co-driver: Ondřej Krajča (CZE) Team: ACCR Czech Rally Team Car: Peugeot 208 R2

“We are really looking forward to Poland. It will be another brand-new rally for us, so the most important thing will be to gain experience and finish the rally. But for sure we will also try to push on some stages.”

Nabila Tejpar(GBR) ERC3 Junior
Co-driver: Max Freeman (GBR) Car: Peugeot 208 R2

“We had a bit of a nightmare [on Rally Islas Canarias] as the 208 was incorrectly geared for the roads we were using. But, to be honest, I still loved every minute of the ERC and I’m delighted to be able to come back again in Poland. I don’t have any previous experience [in Poland] but I know the gravel stages are ultra-fast so fortune will certainly favour the brave. I’ll have to try and balance a good pace against the need for some solid points.”

Ken Torn (EST) ERC3 Junior
Co-driver: Kauri Pannas (EST) Team: Estonian Autosport Junior Team Car: Ford Fiesta R2T

“For sure we hope to make a good result like in Liepāja but first of all let’s see if we can keep the pace. I’ve never done the rally before, but I was there as a spectator in 2017 when it was part of the world championship. I remember seeing some very fast jumps and some sandy and soft places. It looks enjoyable and I hope I can get a good result.”

Adam Westlund (SWE) ERC3 Junior
Co-driver: Joakim Sjöberg (SWE) Team: Saintéloc Junior Team Car: Peugeot 208 R2

“I’m doing the ERC Junior because I know how good the competition is and the best way to learn to be fast is to race against the fastest. We are not here to achieve a podium, but I would like to have some top-three times in the class at the end of the rally. I know that Rally Poland is very sandy and quite fast, but it has some more twisty places where it can be some big ruts.”
