•    Krupiński pleased with great debut at traditional track of Monza

•    Title fight remains close with only four remaining race

JP Motorsport was ready for the fourth of a total of sixth race meetings of the International GT Open this weekend. Since the season finally got underway, the newly-found team had ranked amongst the title aspirants in the PRO-AM Class. And the team did not disappoint at the traditional race-track of Monza in Italy either, collecting important points towards the championship in their #88 Mercedes-AMG GT3.

Race 1 I Saturday, 26th September 2020

Patryk Krupiński celebrated his debut at the autumnally Autodromo Nazionale Monza and got to learn the almost six-kilometre-long track in his young GT3 career with two free practice sessions and the Bronze test. He learned quickly into practice and qualified in a neat 11th place for the 70-minute race on Saturday.

Once the green lights started the first race of the weekend, the 17 GT3 race-cars sped up to the first chicane. The JP Motorsport pilot had a clean start and a good first chicane, however, to avoid contact with a Ferrari one turn later he was forced to cut through the chicane. In due course, the Pole was asked to give back one position to the AKM Motorsport #13 Mercedes-AMG GT3. However, Krupiński was able to make up ground lap-by-lap and by the seventh lap he was running back in tenth position.

Krupiński handed over the car to his team-mate, the Austrian Christian Klien, after 40 race minutes and after the penalty time of ten seconds due to their victory from the Red Bull Ring, Klien re-joined in 12th place. Klien fought his way up into tenth place, in which he also finished the race.

JP Motorsport was later given an additional 5-second-penalty, since Krupiński had not only made-up one but two places on the first lap. The team still collected four important points towards the championship with P4 in PRO-AM.

In warmer temperatures than on Saturday, Christian Klien secured position five on the grid (P2 in PRO-AM) in qualifying on Sunday morning. The team was looking optimistically for the chance of a podium finish, since the team was heading into the race without a handicap.

After a flying start, Christian Klien avoided another car and ran wide across the chicane, however, was able to re-join the track without damage on the car. Through this detour, Klien had lost two positions, but after great battles with both the #25 Ferrari 488 GT3 as well as the #13 Mercedes AMG GT3, the Austrian was able to regain his fifth place by lap four.

There was no time to take a breath, as a four-car-battle was about to kick off. By lap ten, the JP Motorsport driver had three cars at his tail, all fighting for 5th place. But Klien kept a cool head and defended his position until his pitstop.

The number 88 came into the pits for the obligatory stop with only two minutes until the closing of the pitstop-window. Patryk Krupiński took behind the wheel of the #88 Mercedes-AMG GT3 and returned in overall fourth position and second in PRO-AM.

The Safety Car collected the GT3 field on lap 24 to recover debris from Turn 2. Krupiński had his strongest competitor of the championship just ahead of him at the re-start, but he had to settle in fourth place behind the #16 McLaren 720 S GT3.

JP Motorsport crossed the finishing line in overall fourth place as the best Mercedes in the starting field, whilst also securing yet another podium finish with P2 in PRO-AM.

The team will be busy preparing for three consecutive race weekends in the next couple of weeks. The GT Open mark the start with their round at the traditional Belgium track of Spa from 16th until 18th October, shortly followed by the long-anticipated 24-hours of Spa. No time to take a breather as the GT Open will round-up their championship with the final round at Barcelona one week later.

But first of all, the team is heading to Spa for the official test days on Tuesday and Wednesday for the 24-hours of Spa.

Dirk Martin, Performance Engineer

“The whole team has worked really well over the entire weekend here at Monza. The pitstop work went also really well. We put in solid results in the PRO-AM, which wasn´t that easy since the McLaren had an advantage with their top speed and were quicker in each sector. From that point of view, we are satisfied with our weekend. It is nice to see Patryk´s development and both him and Christian did not make any mistakes throughout. All-in-all, a really good weekend for our team.”

Christian Klien (Austrian)

“Although it was Patryk´s first time here at Monza, he learned the track pretty quickly. He qualified in P11 on Saturday and we were pleased with the result. We had a few handicaps in Saturday´s race with the penalty and the ten extra seconds, and more than P10 was not possible.

Since we were very happy with the performance of our car, we were optimistic about Sunday. P5 in qualifying was great, since we lacked a bit of top-speed with the Mercedes, especially in the first sector. The start was relatively aggressive by some drivers behind me, I was pushed and had to run across the chicane.

Afterwards we had a great fight for many laps, and I was able to deal with the pressure, which was important. Patryk drove a faultless race and it is a lot of fun to be his team-mate, because you can just see how he consistently improves. To gain P4 overall on a track such as Monza is a very good achievement for us.”

Patryk Krupiński (Poland)

“I very much enjoyed racing at Monza for the very first time. I am pleased with my races, especially with my performances on Sunday. Unfortunately, we lost our gap due to the late Safety Car period, but I was able to fight off the pressure and bring home a good fourth place. I look forward to the races to come.”
