Mika Mäki (Mücke Motorsport, 1:41.470 min) once again showed himself in great shape at the 5.245 kilometres long Mugello circuit. The winner of the season opener was also the fastest of the 20 drivers in free practice of Formula 3 Euro Series in Mugello in Italy.

The Finn was followed by Kazuya Oshima (Manor Motorsport, 1:41.483 min), Nico Hülkenberg (ART Grand Prix, 1:41.488 min) and Niall Breen (Manor Motorsport, 1:41.539 min). All four junior drivers lapped within less than 0.1 seconds.

With three minutes left before the end of free practice, Mäki put his name on top of the time sheets, beating Oshima, who had been first up to that point. "In the pre-event test on Thursday, I was still having trouble. My car was unbalanced and I was still searching for the fastest line. Today, things were running much better", the Finn said.

Japanese driver, Oshima, who only dropped back to second in the closing stages, was happy. "Yesterday, my car was good already. Between the season opener at Hockenheim and this weekend, we tested at Snetterton. There, we found a good set-up for fast corners, which pays off here.

" For this afternoon’s qualifying, he is still a little sceptical. "I think that it will not be easy. Because of the rubber on the track from the DTM, the asphalt will be much different from what we just had in free practice."

That the Manor team has done quite a good job indeed prior to Mugello was also proven by fourth place for Breen, fifth for Tsukakoshi and seventh for Bird, the other three drivers of the British team. Niall Breen was happy with his improvement:

"I only had some trouble finding a clear lap. Apart from that, I am happy with free practice. I think that I will even be able to fight for pole in qualifying. But after my rather poor start in Hockenheim, I would already be very happy with a top six result."

Edoardo Mortara (Signature-Plus, 1:41.606 min) was the best-placed driver with a Volkswagen engine in free practice in Mugello, ranking sixth behind Sam Bird (Manor Motorsport, 1:41.692 min).

For Richard Philippe (Carlin Motorsport, 1:42.51 min), who had set the fastest lap time in testing on the day before, things were running less well. "The battery and the gearbox on my car didn’t work. As a result, I had to wait for more than half an hour before I was able to take up free practice", he said. The Frenchman ended up only 22nd, 1.04 seconds down on the fastest time.
