Jon Lancaster will line up on the fifth row of the grid for the first of two Formula 3 Euroseries races at Nürburgring this weekend. The 19 year-old F3 rookie struggled to get a clear lap in the 30 minutes session ahead of Saturday’s round 11 of the 20-round series.
"I struggled to get a clear lap in qualifying and then on new tyres I braked a little too early on my fast run which cost me around three tenths of a second. Without that I’m sure I could have been in the top four. I had understeer early in the session but I just didn’t get a good run to string all my quickest sectors together."
Jon is one of a handful of drivers in their first season in Euroseries Formula 3 and is still in only his second season in cars following a very successful karting career. Last season, what started out as a two-year assault on the Eurocup Formula Renault 2.0 Championship, netted him the runner-spot after a dominant second half of the year.
ART Grand Prix, formerly ASM, is the outfit that steered Lewis Hamilton to the title and Jon remains determined to follow the career path of Britain’s latest GP star as he bids for title glory. Two good results this weekend would catapult him back into the championship battle, but the Multiflight-backed driver knows he has a tough challenge ahead.
"For certain we had the potential to be within the first two rows again, but I’m confident going into the race tomorrow. If I can make a good start I should be able to make up some places off the line. It’s quite easy to pass here normally too so if it stays dry I will aim to get into the top eight easily.
"The forecast is for rain tomorrow though and if that does happen a top three position is very much a possibility."
Jon’s first race will take place at 11.50 local time tomorrow morning with the second race, shown live on Motors TV scheduled to start at 09.45 British time on Sunday.
