Formula 3 Euro Series at Zandvoort:
Track length: 4.307 kilometres
Lap record: 1:33.203 minutes / Eric Salignon, 2005
Distance: 26 laps
Winners 2007: Romain Grosjean / Nico Hülkenberg
This weekend, the Formula 3 Euro series drivers will travel to the Dutch North Sea coast. On Zandvoort’s 4.307-kilometre circuit, a former GP venue, the young guns will contest the ninth and tenth rounds of the season, with Italy’s Edoardo Mortara (Signature-Plus) holding the championship lead, prior to the Dutch Formula 3 Euro Series weekend.
With eight rounds contested, the 21-year old is the only driver on the grid who succeeded in scoring points in every single round of the season to date. Consequently, he will hit the road to the Netherlands with a 15-point lead over the current runner-up, Nico Hülkenberg (ART Grand Prix).
Hülkenberg, however, has the fondest memories of Zandvoort as he claimed victory in last year’s Sunday round, held in torrential rain. And in the current season, the German who also works as Formula 1 test driver for the Williams team already celebrated two race wins. Only one other driver, Finland’s rookie Mika Mäki (Mücke Motorsport), also succeeded in making it twice to the highest step on the podium.
But having failed to score any points on the latest two Formula 3 Euro Series race weekends, the Finn has dropped back to fourth position in the championship, behind his Mücke Motorsport team-mate Christian Vietoris.
One point behind Mäki, Renger van der Zande (Prema Powerteam) holds fifth position, thus being the currently best placed Dutch driver in the championship.
Renger van der Zande (Prema Powerteam): "I’m looking forward to my home event. There, I’m always supported by a particularly big number of fans and friends. I have delivered some rather good races at Zandvoort, in the past, and know the circuit really well.
Contesting races there is big fun. For this weekend, I’ve set myself the goal to secure a podium finish in the Saturday round. A realistic goal from my point of view as my team, Prema, has done a good job so far."
The Formula 3 Euro Series is covered live or re-live in 20 countries. Furthermore, Formula 3 Euro Series race résumés are broadcasted in numerous countries.
