Die ehemalige Formel-1-Strecke im belgischen Zolder ist am kommenden Wochenende Schauplatz des RTL GP Masters of Formula 3. Bei dem prestigeträchtigen Formel-3-Vergleich treffen auf dem 3,977 Kilometer langen Kurs die 37 besten Nachwuchspiloten aus den verschiedenen Formel-3-Serien Europas aufeinander. In der Siegerliste des Masters stehen bereits prominente Namen wie David Coulthard (Sieger 1991) oder Lewis Hamilton (Sieger 2005).
Erst zum zweiten Mal in der Geschichte des Rennens versucht ein Pilot eine Titelverteidigung. Der Deutsche Nico Hülkenberg (ART Grand Prix), der im vergangenen Jahr in Zolder gewann, tritt zur diesjährigen Ausgabe erneut an. Hülkenberg ist nach zwölf Saisonrennen der Formel 3 Euro Serie Zweiter der Gesamtwertung, sein Rückstand auf den Führenden Edoardo Mortara (Signature-Plus) beträgt nur einen Zähler.
Aus dem Feld der Formel 3 Euro Serie nehmen insgesamt 26 Fahrer am RTL GP Masters of Formula 3 teil. Aus der Euro Serie fehlt einzig das Team RC Motorsport in Belgien.
Seit Gründung der Formel 3 Euro Serie im Jahr 2003, hat immer ein Pilot dieser Serie beim Masters of Formula 3 triumphiert - ein Beweis für die Stärke der Nachwuchsserie. Nach Christian Klien, der 2003 als Erster abgewinkt wurde, waren das in den folgenden Jahren die ASM-Piloten Alexandre Prémat, Lewis Hamilton, Paul di Resta und Nico Hülkenberg.
Nico Hülkenberg (ART Grand Prix): "Ich freue mich auf das Masters und auch auf die Rennstrecke von Zolder. Es ist noch eine Piste der alten Schule, auf der das Fahren besonders viel Spaß macht.
