At the 2.977 kilometres long Circuit de Catalunya, Japanese Kazuya Oshima (Manor Motorsport) celebrated his maiden victory in the Formula 3 Euro Series. In the 16 races held so far this year, he is already the ninth different winner.
Having started from pole position, he led all the way from lights to flag. The other podium places were taken by Christian Vietoris (Mücke Motorsport) and Jules Bianchi (ART Grand Prix). Nico Hülkenberg (ART Grand Prix), who is still leading in the points’ standings, retired due to a damaged front wing following a collision in the opening stages of the race.
Oshima arrived in the Formula 3 Euro Series as the reigning Japanese Formula 3 champion, but had quite a hard time at the start of the season. He only scored his first point in the series in yesterday’s 15th round and the reversed-grid system allowed him to start from pole position today. He made the best use of this chance and secured his Manor team the first victory of the season.
Behind him, the first collision already happened right after the start with Nico Hülkenberg as one of the driver involved. Yann Clairay (SG Formula) took second place, but was denied a podium finish during the race, first by Vietoris and then by Bianchi. French rookie Bianchi showed a very strong performance, making his way up from 27th on the grid to third place at the finish.
Kazuya Oshima (Manor Motorsport): "I am overjoyed, this is a fantastic day. Finally, I have scored my maiden victory in the Formula 3 Euro Series. It is just great. Especially as my season has been very difficult so far and I didn’t score any good results yet."
Christian Vietoris (Mücke Motorsport): "The start was spectacular with a lot of chaos. Once I had overtaken Yann Clairay for second, the race was relatively easy for me. The gap to Kazuya was too big and I didn’t have any pressure from behind. I safely drove home. Now, my goal must be second place in the points’ standings."
Jules Bianchi (ART Grand Prix): "Making it all the way from 27th on the grid to finish third is a great result. One of the reasons for it was that I stayed on the inside through the first corner and thus avoided the chaos after the start. After that, I was fifth, but I managed to overtake James Jakes and Yann Clairay and thus came onto the podium."
