Ferrari F430 n.1 Andrea Montermini \ Michele Maceratesi
Ferrari F430 n.3 Max Busnelli \ Mauro Massironi
Sunday, July 15, 2007 As the chequered flag fell on the field, it looked as if Montermini had finished 12th place and Busnelli was 9th, but when penalties were served by drivers ahead of them for pitting against the regulations during a safety car period, the two Scuderia Playteam SaraFree cars of Busnelli and Montermini were classified 4th and 6th respectively.
Despite the result, Andrea Montermini comments: "I feel that my race was spoiled from the start as I had a cut on the tire. I am really not happy today as we had a good car with lot of potential."
There was a lot of action at the start of the 26-lap Magny Cours race as Andrea Montermini immediately stormed up a place to third, but on lap three, his car spun after contact with another competitor. After a trip to the pits he resumed the race. Meanwhile Max Busnelli in car number three had climbed up to second.
As the race progressed, Busnelli was up to second and Montermini sixth when the safety car was deployed, and the team observed the regulations and did not attempt a driver change. A fierce battle followed between Busnelli and the Mosler MT900R of Luis Villalba.
"Busnelli said: It was a very difficult race. I never lost hope because I knew that the competitors ahead of me had a handicap. Frankly, I was happy to see the car in second position when the safety car came back in the pits."
His team-mate Mauro Massironi took over on lap 16 and drove 7 laps: "It was not my day today. My mind was not focused on the race and my thoughts were going to my mother. I had a rough time. But at the change of drivers the team had warned me about the state of the track. So, I was cautious. Nevertheless, I made a small mistake at the fourth corner and Michele passed me. Later, I was fighting with the Mosler MT900R. The race was interesting."
As the regulation planned it, Maceratesi used the right window and stopped on lap 16 after the safety car period to also get back to the pits and returned in 9th place, while Busnelli used the last fractions of the window session authorized to change driver and restarted in 10th place.
Macesatesi commented: "It was so hard today. Firstly, because we had not race for such a long time. I had a good start overall, even if I had a problem with the wheel. I had a few experience off track on the gravel and also a contact with Gene that made me loose a lot of time. But overall, I am rather satisfied with the result."
Team owner, Giambattista Giannocarro and Scuderia Playteam SaraFree would like to extend their best wishes to Mauro Massironi whose mother underwent major surgery this morning in a French hospital.
