Michael Meadows, 18 year old racing driver from Banbury, Oxfordshire, raced to eighth place in the first of the two Formula BMW races at Donington Park racing circuit in Derbyshire this weekend. Meadows fortunes were reversed in the second race with a racing incident putting him a lap down, but he battled on to finish the race.

The weekend began with a one-day test session for the Formula BMW racers and Meadows performed well, posting third fastest lap in the morning and fifth fastest time in the afternoon. Qualifying for the races followed two days later and Meadows posted 13th time for the first race, with car problems hampering his efforts to reproduce the form that he had shown in testing. The Master Motorsport team worked hard to make the changes needed for Meadows to improve his performance and with a better handling car he was able to notch up fifth fastest lap to line up on the third row of the grid for the second race.

In the first race Meadows started conservatively, determined to stay out of a possible first corner melee and he maintained his start place. As the race progressed Meadows steadily made his way past his rivals and by the end of the race had improved by five places, to take eighth position at the chequered flag.

Meadows’ hoped that his fifth place start for the second race would give him a better opportunity for a podium finish, but after a few laps of hard racing he was caught up in a three-car fight for a corner, with a rival spinning him round and leaving him beached on the kerb. He was able to rejoin the race, but needed to pit for damage repair which put him a lap down on the pack. He raced on to the chequered flag, putting in a string of quick laps, including third fastest lap of the race, demonstrating his strong pace.

Meadows reflected on his day saying, "Formula BMW is a highly competitive, highly charged racing environment and it’s sometimes difficult not to stay out of trouble and today was an example of this. This morning I knew it was a tall order to get top five, but I pushed hard and passed cars ahead whenever I could. The second race was a different story; it was a racing incident and no one person’s fault. It’s behind me now, I’m moving on and looking forwards to Snetterton."

The Formula BMW championship moves on to Snetterton in two weeks time, for rounds 15 and 16 of the 20 round series.
