Günther Unterreitmeier, you are team principal of GU-Racing in Formula BMW and also project manager of the Formula Cup Mallorca. What is the aim of the Formula Cup Mallorca?
The basic aim of Formula Cup Mallorca is to offer a cost-effective entry in formula racing for karting drivers who want to step up.$
What means cost-effective?
The Formula Cup Mallorca will be a professional series for young drivers. We will have a coaching program with workshops, in which every driver could take part free of charge. We offer effectiveness in media and a concept with aimed chances to step up to higher formula series. The drivers learn the basics of formula racing, so that a high level will develop itself. The costs for the 5 race weekends and the 2 official testing days are 29.000 Euro (excl. Tax). It is not possible to drive an international championship in karting for this cost in a competitive way.
So, the drivers only need there driving equipment and the costs for travelling?
Yes, the insurance is included with a deductible of max. 2.500 Euro for an accident. The hotels and flights to Mallorca are not very expensive in the winter.
Apropos winter. The race weekends will take place from January to April 2007, why?
Some drivers want to drive kart collateral or another series, etc. Furthermore the weather and the temperature at Mallorca are ideal for racing at this time. The Circuit Mallorca offers different versions of the track which we will use, so the races will be hold at different tracks practical.
The equal car for all participants is the Formula Junior. All cars will be appointed by the Team GU-Racing. How will it run and what is your aim?
If all cars are appointed by the same team, we must not charge the drivers with extra costs. Therefore we save that all cars have got the same basic set-up. The opportunity for the driver is to change the wings and the tyre pressure. The aim is equal opportunity.
That is also the reason why the cars will be changed?
Yes, the cars of the top 5 drivers will be changed with the cars of the last 5 for the following race weekend. Indeed the Formula Juniors are equal cars with the same set-up, but every driver should get sure that the cars have no differences. The work with the instructors at the workshops will be like in a big team. For sure the drivers could learn faster because of this openness. The Formula Juniors will be prepared by the mechanics of GU-Racing. Every driver nominates a personal assistant. For example the personal assistant will show the pit-board or will go along with to driver into the pit-lane to hold the drinking-bottle…
The official organizer is the Vision Management S.L. – who is the Vision Management S.L.?
The Vision Management S.L. is a spanish group of companies who is based directly in Palma de Mallorca. Vision Management is not involved in motorsport directly. GU-Racing is delegated with the completely realization and is sustained contact.
The participation is possible without a licence.
Yes, because of the Formula Cup Mallorca is a private organised series, like the Skip Barber Series in USA, so that you will be a rookie if you step up to another series afterwards. That means also that it is possible to announce for a solarship, like the Formula BMW solarship in Valencia.
Not more than 15 seats resp. cockpits are available. How is the interest of Formula Cup Mallorca?
The first announcements are from drivers who come from Switzerland, Netherland, Spain, Mexico, USA e.g. Lots of drivers who are interested visit us at Circuit Mallorca at the moment. Thereby the drivers get the chance to drive the Formula Junior.
So, the series will be international?
For sure, the Formula Cup Mallorca is an international championship. We are glad about the internationality, so we hope that we could give the last cockpits to drivers who come from different countries.
