Valtteri Bottas schenkte seinem Teamchef Timo Rumpfkeil einen dritten Platz zum 33. Geburtstag. Somit sorgte der Auftakt zur vorletzten World Series Veranstaltung in Estoril für durchaus zufriedene Gesichter. Wohlgleich eine Platzierung vor dem Tabellenführer Daniel Ricciardo für den Kampf um die Meisterschaft besser gewesen wäre.
Dieser gewann nämlich den ersten Wochenendlauf am Samstag vor Roberto Merhi und dem Motopark-Piloten, der das Rennen aus der zweiten Startposition in Angriff nahm.
Mit einem riesigen Aufgebot von sechs Autos samt Piloten und 19 Mann Personal ist die Mannschaft aus Oschersleben nach Portugal gereist. Neben NEC-Meister Valtteri Bottas sind noch Tobias Hegewald, Kuba Giermaziak, Antonio Felix Da Costa, Juan Pablo Garcia und Vinicius Sammarone mit am Start. Die Dominanz aus den freien Trainingssitzungen setzte sich auch im Qualifying fort. Doch in der alles entscheidenden Phase wurde das Zeittraining wegen mehrerer Unfälle unterbrochen.
Nur knapp 3 Minuten standen noch auf der Uhr, als die Strecke wieder frei gegeben wurde. Alle stürzten sich in die letzten beiden Runden, so dass es auf der gesamten Strecke kaum ein freies Stück Asphalt gab. Somit musste sich Bottas für das erste Rennen mit Startplatz zwei zufrieden geben.
Für den Sonntagslauf holte sich der Finne aber die Pole-Position. Für die restlichen Motopark-Racer blieb es bei Positionen im Mittelfeld. "Das war natürlich ärgerlich. Die rote Flagge kam für uns 10 Sekunden zu früh. Alle waren gerade auf schnellen unterwegs, als das Qualifying unterbrochen wurde", ärgerte sich auch der Teamchef.
Im Rennen konnte sich Valtteri vorerst behaupten und setzte den führenden Ricciardo unter Druck. Im Zweikampf wurde er dann von Roberto Merhi angegriffen und letztendlich überholt. Antonio Felix Da Costa und Tobias Hegewald boten derweil ein kampfstarkes Rennen und verbesserten sich von den Startplätzen zehn und elf auf Rang fünf und sechs.
"Im Rennen geht es immer recht gut, doch mein Problem ist das Qualifying. Ich muss einfach in der Startaufstellung weiter nach vorne", gab Hegewald selbstkritisch zu.
Im Kampf um die Meisterkrone im 2,0 Eurocup ist für Bottas noch lange nichts verloren. Er liegt nun punktgleich mit Merhi und Caldarelli (alle 101 Punkte) 13 Zähler hinter Ricciardo. Bei noch 46 zu vergebenen Punkten haben also alle 4 Fahrer reelle Chancen auf den Titel. In das zweite Rennen des Wochenendes geht es am morgigen Sonntag um 13.00 Uhr.
