Andreas Zuber GP2 Monaco preview

Andreas Zuber strives for his third podium place this year at the possibly most important race this season

"Monaco doesn’t excuse any faults. Either you’re on pole or you hit the guard rails during your fastest lap"

Andreas Zuber faces the possibly most important two races this season. When the GP2-series will stop on Friday and Saturday at Monte Carlo, even the most experienced drivers will feel their pulse quicken. The VIPs aren’t the only reason for this, rather the characteristics of this circuit that demand everything of the drivers.

Zuber: "A city circuit has its own laws. It is narrow, yet you are extremely fast. If you make a mistake you don’t only ruin your lap but also your car since you’re sure to crash into the guard rails. It is an enormous challenge that nevertheless is great fun. During the qualifying you have to risk everything since that is the only chance for the pole position or at least a place in the front row."

In 2006 the 24-year-old Styrian finished the run in fifth place. Last year he was in third starting position but couldn’t move off due to gearbox problems. Zuber: "That was really frustrating since I couldn’t move the car even for a few centimetres." Therefore he naturally is resolved to do better this time. "I know that I am fast. Additionally, I have a very fast teammate in Maldonado who has won last year here in Monaco. Therefore we dispose of very good data which should help us here."

Following his two podium places this season Zuber also hopes to reach the very same in the principality. Zuber: "So far we always excelled in the first run. In the sprint races on the second day, on the other hand, we were jinxed. I want to do better this time in this respect for it would be extremely important to score points in both runs."

The hubbub surrounding the race weekend in Monte Carlo doesn’t bother the Moser Medical Group-driver. Piquet Sports have their team qaurters in Nice. But Zuber doesn’t mind visiting Monaco apart from the race: "I have several friends in Monte that I love to visit now and then. It is a beautiful town and I cherish the time spent there."

The runs in Monaco will take place on Friday (May 23) and Saturday (May 24). The Circuit de Monaco is 3.340 kilometres long.
