ART Grand Prix Monza review

15.09.2008: ART Grand Prix Monza review

ART GRAND PRIX MONZA, GP2 Series – 13th and 14th SEPTEMBER 2008

It was certainly not the finale ART Grand Prix would have dreamt of with the Monza weekend taken as an abstract of the entire season to some degree. Despite the disappointment of his worst starting grid position of the season, a win was certainly possible for Romain Grosjean in Monza but it was not to be the Frenchman’s weekend. His 6th podium finish and another 9 points for the Frenchman was not sufficient to allow him to take the runner up position in his debut season of GP2 Europe.

Sakon Yamamoto has his share of bad luck when two fuel pump problems prevented him seeing the chequered flag in both races.

ART Grand Prix wrapped up the year with a title in GP2 Asia and some wins and a high level of performance in GP2 Europe. We want to thank all our partners and sponsors for another extremely competitive season and we will work hard to defend our crown in the Asia series and return to the top of the European series

Sakon Yamamoto

Race 1 Position on grid: 14th Result: DNF

Race 2 Position on grid: 19th Result: DNF

Position in the championship: 0 point

"This was a frustrating weekend really. We jumped from wet tyres to dry ones and vice versa and had to make a lot of compromise with the set-up of the car because with mixed conditions you never know what will happen. My race pace was not bad at all but mechanical gremlins put a halt to both my races. I want to thank ART Grand Prix for its work and dedication as well as for the help they gave me at all times. I am disappointed with the result but I know we deserved better."

Romain Grosjean

Race 1 Position on grid: 11th Result: 4th

Race 2 Position on grid: 5th Result: 3rd

Position in the championship: 4th, 62 points

"It’s been a while last I raced in Monza and the changing weather did not help me get to grips with the track and the car. I was disappointed with my qualifying but I had a sensible race with a package that I was not 100% comfortable. To finish in the top 3 in the championship was my aim arriving in Italy and I kept my hopes alive on Saturday night but the next day I was hampered by D’Ambrosio who cut the chicane twice but always kept his position.

I gave it my all to try to catch up with the leader as I still had a chance to get past Senna and Di Grassi in the championship. I made a mistake by pushing too hard but I have no regrets. The points we lost earlier in the season, of which neither the team nor I were responsible for, hit us hard.

But I will always have a very nice memory of this season and of my work with a fabulous team. We clinched the title in GP2 Asia and even though the GP2 Europe did not go as good we showed we had the potential to do great things."

Frédéric Vasseur

"The finale result is quite disappointing but our level of performance was certainly one of the very best. Romain had to cope with Monza for the first time at the wheel of such a powerful car with no downforce. The weather made things hard but he secured two decent results.

We are the GP2 Asia champions and we had ups and downs in the European Series but above all we were very competitive, the atmosphere was great within the team who worked well thanks to our sponsors, partners and drivers. We had some bad luck, a bit of lack of confidence sometimes, but we will learn our lesson and we will come back stronger in 2009."
