Luca Filippi Istanbul GP2 qualifying

A loose sidepod stood between Luca Filippi and a strong showing in qualifying today in Istanbul: the Italian's session was ruined as a result of his sidepod coming open at the end of the session necessitating a return to the pits, which meant he was unable to improve on his best time just as his rivals turned up the heat.

The unplanned stop, along with an unfortunately timed call into the weighbridge, meant that Luca's best lap was 1:34.366, 1.7 seconds off countryman Giorgio Pantano's pole time of 1:32.659, pushing him down to 18th position on the timesheets.

The day did not start as well as expected after a change in set up did not go to plan, giving him an almost undriveable car in free practice. "This morning we tried a new set up," he reflected, "but obviously it was too much and the car was too hard to control. As soon as we got back to the paddock we changed the car back, and it was much better at the start of qualifying."

The early stages of qualifying bore out his comments: Luca was able to run in the top six for the first half of the session, but when he went back out on track for the second half it all went wrong. "As soon as I started to push I could feel something wrong, and when I looked in my mirror I could see that the sidepod was open! There was nothing I could do but come back to the box, and when I did they waved me into scrutineering, so I lost another five minutes when I didn't have it.

"When I came back out I had only 2 minutes, which is not enough for anything. I was pushing hard - you could see when I came out of the pits how much - but I just ran out of time. I am really disappointed: I was on pole here last year, and for sure I was expecting the same, but it was just impossible."

Luca will line up in seventeenth position as a result of a grid penalty for Ben Hanley for causing an avoidable accident in Barcelona, and will hope for the best: "We shall see: this is a circuit where you can overtake, so I will push tomorrow and hope for the best."

Istanbul Qualifying:

1. Giorgio Pantano 1:32.659

2. Andreas Zuber + 0.254

3. Adam Carroll + 0.482

4. Romain Grosjean + 0.589

18. Luca Filippi + 1.707
