Der Moser Medical Group Pilot belegt beim Qualifying am Freitag mit knappem Rückstand den fünften Platz 

Die Premiere der GP2 auf dem Stadtkurs von Valencia stellte die Fahrer vor einige Probleme. So war das Qualifying am Freitag von Drehern, Crashs und gelben Flaggen geprägt. Kurzzeitig musste die Session sogar gestoppt werden, da Kobayashi in eine Wand fuhr. Andreas Zuber hatte diesbezüglich keine Probleme, dafür umso mehr mit dem Verkehr, weshalb es mit dem erhofften Platz in der ersten Startreihe nichts wurde.

Der 24-jährige Steirer belegte am Ende den fünften Rang – mit weniger als fünf Zehntel Rückstand auf Pole Position-Mann Giorgio Pantano. Dies bedeutet, dass er das morgige erste GP2-Rennen im spanischen Valencia von Reihe drei aus in Angriff nehmen wird.

„Es war einfach zuviel Verkehr. Und das ist bei einem Stadtkurs natürlich ein doppelter Nachteil. In Wahrheit konnte ich nur eine schnelle Runde fahren. Und dafür ist das Ergebnis eigentlich gar nicht so schlecht, wenn man bedenkt, dass ich weniger als fünf Zehntel hinter Pantano bin. Was mit unserem Auto möglich ist, wenn man freie Fahrt hat, hat mein Teamkollege gezeigt", so Andreas Zuber.

Dieser, der Venezuelander Pastor Maldonado, war sicher die Überraschung des Qualifyings. Denn er wurde nur um 0,071 Sekunden vom Gesamtführenden Giorgio Pantano geschlagen. Doch genau diese Zeit ist es, die Andreas Zuber für das morgige Rennen Hoffnung gibt: „Das Rennen ist lang, da ist einiges möglich. Und dass mein Piquet Sports-Bolide gut geht, ist ebenfalls klar. Für mich kann das Ziel nur heißen: ein Platz auf dem Podium."
