The town circuit of Valencia poses a new challenge that demands everything of drivers
It is already two weeks past that Andreas Zuber surpassed his overall-won points from last year in Budapest. The eight points for second place in the main race on Saturday added up to 32 points for the Moser Medical Group driver – two more than in 2007. But the 24-year-old Styrian doesn’t want to rest on that since he is still missing a victory this year.
Following four podium places so far Zuber wants to stand on top of the podium next weekend at the town circuit race in Valencia. But the course in Spain’s third biggest city is unchartered territory. The big unknown for all competitors. And a great challenge at the same time.
"I really don’t have a problem with this, in fact I am rather looking forward to it. I’m sure that the atmosphere will be great. Spaniards, after all, are known to be hot-blooded. I’m certain that things will be at a peak when we go off at 16.00 on Saturday.
I actually do already know the circuit but will only go at it at racing speed for the first time on Friday at the training session. It is rather atypical for a town circuit since it is very speedy. Unlike Monte Carlo where one sticks to the guard railings, so to say. But that is fine for me since I’m known to love speed ", explains Zuber.
In order to be perfectly prepared for the the last three racing-weekends in the GP2 season 2008 Piquet Sports has put a lot of effort into catching up on the minimal gap on the competition. Still, Zuber knows that things will get even tougher from now on:
"The closer we get to the finale the more on edge those drivers will be that have not had some success this year. Everyone tries to be in a perfect position for negotiations for next year. Furthermore there is the fight for one or more opportunities for being a testing driver in Formula 1. That is when everyone stops being chums."
And Andreas Zuber also has some plans for the overall ranking. 48 points overall will be awarded at the remaining three racing-weekends, counting both main and sprint runs. The Styrian currently only misses seven points on third place in the overall ranking which clearly defines the objective:
"I obviously will try my all to get onto the podium in the overall ranking. In the end, that wouldn’t be a bad selling point, would it?"
The town circuit of Valencia has a length of 5,473 kilometres.
Driver overall ranking GP2 (after 14 of 20 runs) 1. Giorgio Pantano 65 points, 2. Bruno Senna 58 points, 3. Lucas Di Grassi 39 points, 4. Romain Grosjean 36 points, 5. Sebastien Buemi 34 points, 6. Andreas Zuber 32 points 7. Karun Chandhok 31 points, 8. Pastor Maldonado and Alvaro Parente 26 points each.
