Premiere beim Jubiläum: Pünktlich zur 50. Ausgabe der 24 Stunden von Daytona vom 26. bis zum 29. Januar bestreitet der Audi R8 GRAND-AM sein erstes Rennen. Je ein Exemplar des neu entwickelten Kundensport-Rennwagens wird von den beiden Teams APR Motorsport und Oryx Racing in der GT-Klasse des Langstrecken-Rennens eingesetzt.
Das "Rolex 24 at Daytona" zählt zu den ganz großen Klassikern im internationalen Motorsport: Seit 1962 begeistert die Veranstaltung die Sportwagen-Fangemeinde. In der Siegerliste haben sich einige der größten Namen der Motorsportgeschichte verewigt - von Jacky Ickx über Hans Herrmann bis zu Hurley Haywood, A. J. Foyt oder Derek Bell. Auch Reinhold Joest, Gründer des Audi Sport Team Joest, hat den Klassiker in Florida bereits persönlich gewonnen.
Der aktuelle Audi-Werksfahrer Mike Rockenfeller hat den Wettbewerb vor zwei Jahren mit einem amerikanischen Team für sich entschieden. Pünktlich zur 50. Ausgabe verwöhnt der Veranstalter das Publikum mit einem außergewöhnlichen Spektakel: Eine Champions-Party mit zahlreichen Rennfahrer-Legenden, eine Ausstellung alter Siegerfahrzeuge, ein Jahrmarkt mitsamt Riesenrad, ein 5-Kilometer-Lauf auf der Strecke für alle sportbegeisterten Fans am Samstag vor dem Rennen, Autogrammstunden und Pitwalks sind nur einige von vielen Attraktionen am letzten Januar-Wochenende.
"Wir sind stolz, beim Jubiläum der Veranstaltung zum ersten Mal dabei zu sein", unterstreicht Werner Frowein, Geschäftsführer der quattro GmbH, die den Audi R8 GRAND-AM entwickelt hat. "Zwei Kundenteams haben sich bereits für unseren neuen Rennwagen entschieden, mit weiteren Käufern stehen wir in Verhandlungen.
Nach Daytona wird der Audi R8 GRAND-AM auch bei den übrigen zwölf Läufen der GRAND-AM-Serie zu sehen sein. Unsere Kunden werden künftig direkt von Audi of America betreut. Diese Präsenz in Amerika ist ein weiterer wichtiger Baustein für die Entwicklung von Audi Sport customer racing."
Der Audi R8 GRAND-AM tritt in der extrem stark besetzten GT-Klasse beim Saisonauftakt gegen rund 30 andere Fahrzeuge an, während sogenannte Daytona-Prototypen um Gesamtsiege fahren. Die 24 Stunden von Daytona markieren den Beginn der GRAND-AM-Road-Racing-Saison 2012.
Werksseitig war Audi zuletzt 2008 mit dem LMP1-Sportwagen Audi R10 TDI in den USA eine ganze Saison lang präsent und gewann den Titel in der American Le Mans Series (ALMS). Danach folgten nur noch einzelne Sportprototypen-Einsätze in Sebring und Road Atlanta. Nun vertreten die Kundenteams APR Motorsport und Oryx Racing durch ihr eigenes Engagement die Farben von Audi Sport customer racing.
"Der Einstieg in die GRAND-AM Rolex Sports Car Series ist die bislang größte Herausforderung für APR Motorsport", betont Stephen Hooks, Präsident von APR. "Unser Team hat sich mit den früheren Einsätzen in der Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge auf diesen Schritt vorbereitet.
APR ist weltweit bekannt als einer der führenden Tuner für Fahrzeuge von Audi, Volkswagen, Seat und Škoda. Die Vorfreude auf den Audi R8 GRAND-AM ist riesig, unsere Kunden und Fans sind begeistert, und seit dem Test ‚Roar before the 24‘ fiebern wir dem 24-Stunden-Rennen entgegen."
Das Rennteam aus Opelika in Alabama, geleitet von Jeff Mishtawy, vertraut in Daytona auf ein internationales Fahrerquintett. Die Amerikaner Ian Baas und Dr. Jim Norman, Nelson Canache aus Venezuela, Dion von Moltke mit südafrikanischen Wurzeln sowie der frühere Audi-Werksfahrer Emanuele Pirro aus Italien bilden das Fahrerteam.
Oryx Racing geht in Daytona mit Teambesitzer und Fahrer Humaid Al Masaood aus den Vereinigten Arabischen Emiraten an den Start. Er teilt sich das Auto mit seinem Landsmann Saeed Al Mehairi und dem Briten Steven Kane. "2012 beginnt für Oryx Racing und den arabischen Motorsport ein ganz neues Rennsport-Kapitel", freut sich Al Masaood.
"Wir starten mit einem neuen Auto in einer für uns neuen Serie. Es war wichtig für uns, ab dem ersten Tag dieses Projektes dazuzugehören. Wir wollen helfen, diesen faszinierenden Kundensport-Rennwagen von Audi weiterzuentwickeln, um möglichst wettbewerbsfähig zu sein."
Das Team stammt aus den Vereinigten Arabischen Emiraten und verfügt in den USA über eine Teambasis in West College Corner in der Nähe von Indianapolis.
Nach einem Qualifying am Donnerstag beginnt das Rennen am Samstag (28. Januar) und endet am Sonntag (29. Januar) um 15:30 Uhr Ortszeit (21:30 Uhr mitteleuropäischer Zeit).
