Grégoire Munster just misses out his first ERC podium

05.05.2019: Grégoire Munster and his co-driver Louis Louka finished in 24th place overall in the Rally of the Canary Islands. In the Juniors’ ranking Grégoire Munster ended in an excellent fourth place. A strong performance from the Opel Motorsport driver and Ambassa

Grégoire Munster and his co-driver Louis Louka finished in 24th place overall in the Rally of the Canary Islands. In the Juniors’ ranking Grégoire Munster ended in an excellent fourth place. A strong performance from the Opel Motorsport driver and Ambassador of Opel Belgium.

Leaving the podium of the Rallye de Wallonie on Sunday evening Grégoire Munster and Louis Louka headed off in the direction of Eindhoven with as final destination the Canary Islands. The recceing was an experience in itself because neither Grégoire nor Louka had any experience of these typical special stages in the hills.

On Thursday the shakedown and qualifying stage took place. “During the shakedown we were allowed two runs but the team decided to keep it to just one. 7th time out of 17 competitors was encouraging. Matters went less well during the qualifying stage. During Simon Wagner’s run a stone had landed in the middle of the road.

When I passed this specific spot, I was unable to avoid that stone, and I had a puncture. As a Junior you have 14 Pirelli tyres at your disposal. That puncture was pure bad luck, but the regulations know no mercy. And so, Opel Motorsport needed to anticipate and work out an alternative tyre strategy” Grégoire Munster commented.

Notwithstanding the one tyre less and the lack of knowledge when it came to the typical Spanish special stages offering loads of grip, the young Ambassador of Opel Belgium acquitted himself perfectly of his task. Grégoire Munster finished the day as fourth Junior.

The retained approach of the first day ensured that Grégoire Munster was able to go full out the following day. As shown by the times realised. Munster kicked off with a 6th time, after which he produced a 2nd, 4th and 3rd time. In the second loop he improved his times and produced two 2nd and two 3rd times to finally finish as fourth Junior and first Opel driver. The Munster-Louka duo just miss out by 15.7 sec on their first podium.

“In agreement with the team we altered the tuning of the Opel Adam on Saturday morning” Grégoire Munster confirmed. “We made the Opel harder whereby the car more suited to my driving style. Thanks to this I was able to retain my speed in the bends and curves. That was the big difference with Friday.

The times were noticeably better and we finally finished in fourth spot. I’m really satisfied with my performance on Saturday. We were then able to really push and even rather surpassed ourselves. It’s just a great pity that I could not have done this on the Friday. On the other and I don’t want to cut corners and want to give myself time to grow. The professionalism, the advice and the work from Opel Motorsport helps me in that growth process. The team put in excellent work.

And I’m thankful of it, just as I am thankful of my co-driver Louis Louka. Before and during the rally he put in some hard work. On Friday evening it was after midnight when we got under the sheets, after we had viewed some of the onboard images and adapted our notes to the pace of the rally. Definitely quite a great deal higher than in Belgium.”

In a fortnight’s time Grégoire Munster will be competing in the Sezoensrally. And one week following that the next Opel Motorsport assignment is on the books: Rally Liepäja in Lettonia.
