Scuderia Playteam SaraFree took a sensational one-two finish in the first race of the new International GT Open season as Montermini-Maceratesi and Giao-Couceiro brought their two Ferrari 430s home in first and second places respectively.
Montermini started the race from pole in car number three, while Giao was sixth on the grid in car number four. Both drivers made strong starts as Montermini fought off a challenge for the lead and Giao moved up to fourth. Both cars and drivers fought
a hard race to take a perfect result for Scuderia Playteam SaraFree.
Andrea Montermini (car no. 3) commented, "The team worked hard this morning. It turned out to be a perfect race starting from a perfect pole. I won the race and clocked the fastest lap. I am very pleased. I knew the first race of our season would be hard, so it is great to claim this result.
I had an average start because I felt that the red light would never turn green. Then it was quite busy in the group. But after the temporary leader destroyed the front of his car, as our two cars were side by side, he touched me and damaged his car.
Then I had no difficulty passing him again and I pushed like hell to continue the lead and build up the gap. The car was really fast and consistent thanks to our great team work.
I handed the wheel over to Michele Maceratesi who did a great job keeping the lead and taking the chequered flag. It’s great to start the season like this and I’m so pleased to be back on the podium here in Vallelunga after winning here last year."
Pedro Couceiro commented, "Qualifying was a hard session because of our inexperience and the fact that I never had a really clear lap. But we made up for it at the start of the race and I gained two positions. I was satisfied with my start and maintained a strong fourth place for a while before coming to third after about one third of the way into the race.
I was even second as we completed the driver change on lap 15 and the change went well. The race was tough but exciting. My team mate maintained the pressure, and it’s amazing to score a perfect result for the team in the first race of the season."
The team will start from front line and twelfth place for tomorrow’s race 2 since the second free practice session that was troubled with a number of red flag sessions. Michele Maceratesi finished second fastest while Pedro Couceiro Couceiro ended up in twelfth.
