CeMAT 2008, 27 to 31 May - Highlights among the "Products & Innovations"

These "Highlights" are a small selection from the Products and innovations press service for the CeMAT 2008 (registration is mandatory). The press service already covers nearly 180 exciting product innovations and will be updated and extended up until the start of the fair.

Printing with uniquely generated codes

Data Elektronik will be introducing Hardware Security Printing (HSP) as a new groundbreaking development in the electronic signature domain. The innovation involves a technology that is implemented in laser printers and that allows codes to be generated from printing procedures and electronically signed. As the exhibitors point out, the entire process thus takes place seamlessly without any media discontinuity.

The system is based on a Hardware Security Module (HSM). Thanks to the hardware-based link with appropriate technologies, the result of the printout can be marked with the code created. The parameters of this marking occur only once throughout the world and are therefore totally unique, as the German developer stresses.

The code thus generated can, for example, be signed with a qualified signature in the Trust Center and recognized certification authority of the technology and cooperation partner Sign-Trust Deutsche Post Com in compliance with the legally prescribed conditions. The result is applied on the product either visibly or invisibly as a unique form of verification and is also saved in a database together with its original.

Fork lift truck attachments fit for full service

Axle-driven multiple pallet handlers specially conceived for full-service deployment form the focus of the presentation from the lift truck attachment specialists at Hans H. Meyer. In addition, a new generation of the company's fork positioners is said to yield a marked increase in the life cycles of wear parts to up to 20,000 operating hours. The devices now handle loads of up to ten metric tons - a capability that will apparently be further increased in the near future.

Other new developments on show from the manufacturers include optimized paper roll clamps. The program of pulp bale clamps has also been modified, with special emphasis on demanding applications in ports and terminals.

As the German exhibitors point out, the quality of a lift truck attachment becomes particularly evident during full-service deployment, not just in terms of design and construction but also in the lifetime costs and the recyclability after typical service periods of three to five years. As is pointed out, servicing intervals, maintenance-friendliness and the availability of spare parts are factors that play an important role in this respect.

Overhead storage automation for warehouses

The Transfaster vehicles from Westfalia are overhead storage and retrieval vehicles (SRVs) and shelf access systems for material transport that run on rails at the uppermost storage level of the warehouse shelves. As the company explains, the rail guides are integrated in the overall steel construction. The devices comprise a transfer unit (trolley) and a vertically moving lifting platform fitted with the load-carrying device required.

Four wire cables connect the two elements to each other, allowing simultaneous transfer and lifting motions. The system's scalability and flexibility is claimed to guarantee a high degree of efficiency. For instance, when handling volume is low, one device can service several aisles since the unit can easily switch aisles overhead.

Self-sustained container barge for in-port logistics

The Port Feeder Barge from the company of the same name in Hamburg is claimed to provide innovative waterborne logistics and competitive intra-terminal transfers for container ports.

The vessel comprises a self-propelled, double-ended container barge with a capacity of 170 TEU (Twenty-foot Equivalent Units) and equipped with a 40-ton container crane. It has been conceived to ease congestion within container ports and increase the share of inland waterway use in hinterland transport.

The barge is independent from quayside cranes and carries containers that are to be transshipped within ports between the terminals in a manner more environmentally friendly than road trucking. As the exhibitors point out, feeder operators can dispense with the relatively inefficient and time-consuming terminal hopping of their vessels as a result.

The constructors call the solution a floating terminal that enables small vessels such as those used on inland waterways to be served directly without having to call in at the deep-sea terminals and thus block valuable berth capacity. The patented barge system can also act as a lighter for deep-sea container vessels in cases of emergency.
