HANNOVER MESSE 2009, 20 to 24 April - Electroplating technology

07.03.2009: Electroplating is one of the most common surface finishing processes. Every car that rolls off the production line incorporates key components that have been electroplated. Modern medical technology

...takes centre stage at SurfaceTechnology

    * Over 60 companies displaying processes, plant and solutions

Hannover. Electroplating is one of the most common surface finishing processes. Every car that rolls off the production line incorporates key components that have been electroplated. Modern medical technology would be unthinkable without recent advances in electroplating. And the construction industry, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering and the electronics industry, not to mention makers of fashion jewellery, are equally reliant on this form of surface treatment.

Over 60 firms will be exhibiting their products and services for electroplating at the special display WORLD OF SURFACE TREATMENT, which forms part of the trade fair SurfaceTechnology. The central theme is the electroplating of metals - for protection against corrosion and wear - and plastics. The presentation is organized by the German Surface Treatment Federation (ZVO).

Assmus Metallveredelung GmbH is showing a sophisticated process that combines zinc-plating with passivation and high-performance surface sealing. "Superzink 600" is a patented solution for delivering excellent corrosion protection at reduced cost.

The Cr(VI)-free zinc flake technology marketed by Atotech Deutschland GmbH represents an ideal addition to its product portfolio of galvanic anti-corrosion coatings. The Zintek® 300 B/TechSeal® BLACK SL system was specially developed to meet the car industry's requirement for a black surface coating. The system is suitable for coating fastenings such as screws and bolts, nuts, springs and clips; tests have shown that it protects against white rust for over 240 hours and provides protection against corrosion of the base metal for over 1,000 hours.

Coventya GmbH is showing a new type of black passivation system for zinc-nickel plating known as FINIDIP 728.3. The cobalt-free Cr(III) passivation technology for zinc-nickel coatings (12 - 15 per cent) is suitable for rack and barrel application modes. Following on from passivation, FINIDIP 728.3 produces a deep black surface finish that is then further polished to produce a very attractive lustre. In addition to good bath stability, this process also offers outstanding protection against corrosion and temperature extremes, as well as excellent adhesion and scratch-resistance. And because it is applied at low temperature and uses little material, FINIDIP 728.3 is also a very economical process.

With its "Black Autodeposition Coating" (BLAC) the Holzapfel Group has extended its range of versatile anti-corrosion coatings to include organic surface finishes. The chemically deposited coating is very evenly distributed, making it particularly suitable for complex surface geometries. With this process it is possible to coat the inside surfaces of hollow components such as pipes or sleeves. The inherent elasticity and strong adhesion of the coating allow the coated component to be mechanically shaped or formed - e.g. by embossing, crimping, etc. - without affecting the integrity of the coating.

MTV Metallveredlung GmbH & Co. KG specializes in the development of galvanic functional coatings to protect large components against corrosion and wear. At SurfaceTechnology the company is showcasing a remarkable new development in the shape of NICABOR®, a galvanically deposited dispersion coating with outstandingly good anti-wear characteristics.

The range of services offered by Metoba Metalloberflächenbearbeitung GmbH extend from rack, barrel and strip application of coatings to the selective batch coating of small parts. Products can be coated with a wide variety of metals, including tin, chrome, silver and gold. Founded more than 50 years ago and now run by the third generation of the same family, the company has continuously developed and refined the technology of galvanic surface finishing.

Herbert Schmidt GmbH & Co. KG will be exhibiting various systems, including HSO Merlin, a new-generation, high-performance alkaline zinc-plating process, and a plastics electroplating system for the pre-treatment and metallization of plastic substrates (ABS and ABS/PC). In addition, the company will be showing an acid zinc nickel process for the deposition of a durable zinc nickel coating containing 12 - 15 per cent nickel.

As well as companies directly engaged in the electroplating of industrial products, the SurfaceTechnology show has also attracted several manufacturers of ancillary plant associated with electroplating.

WMV Apparatebau GmbH is presenting its TULZ dip-spin-tilt centrifugal coating system. TULZ has already been used successfully for a number of years as a coating station for zinc flake systems, and has been continously refined and developed in the meantime. TULZ is also ideally suited to the application of various sealant coatings used in electroplating.

Walter Lemmen GmbH is principally engaged in the manufacture of plant for the production of circuit boards. But the company also supplies small-scale plating equipment for rack and barrel application, built to individual customer specification, as well as plant for the recovery of precious metals. These small stand-alone and bench-top units are designed for the electroplating of very small assemblies and components.

Richard Tscherwitschke GmbH develops and manufactures high-grade system components for surface treatment and electroplating plant. Among the items on display in Hannover are the fully automated GALVAROB® handling and treatment system. The capabilities of GALVAROB® range from the logistical preparation and buffering of the goods and the automatic filling and emptying of the barrel to treatment with water-saving rinsing technology and drying of the goods in the drum dryer.

Galvanotechnik Baum GmbH presents its system for wet-in-wet parts transfer with double-drum container in swing-out centrifuge baskets. This special process involves the gentle, low-stress treatment of parts in a new zinc/zinc-nickel/zinc-iron drum coater, which is due to come into operation in March 2009. So now customers will have access to an extended range of cost-effective manufacturing options for coating loose goods with zinc, zinc-nickel or zinc-iron.

HARTER Oberflächen- und Umwelttechnik GmbH is one of Europe's leading suppliers of drying plant for the treatment of residual water, paint and sludge. HARTER specializes in the development, manufacture and sale of high-tech drying plant, and this year will be showcasing the HARTER Airgenex® drying system and the HARTER Drymex® sludge-drying system. Nearly every type of aqueous sludge, including metal hydroxide sludge, paint sludge, grinding sludge, sewage sludge and industrial sludge, can be dried quickly and efficiently using this system.

The third main group of exhibitors representing electroplating technology at SurfaceTechnology 2009 consists of subcontractors and suppliers of customized solutions.

Technical solutions that contribute significantly to reducing daily running costs and conserving valuable resources are the focus of this year's presentation by Munk GmbH. The company's exhibits include special DC power supply units that achieve a high degree of operating efficiency. The PKA 2 anodic bath protection processor enables coating firms to reduce their consumption of nickel in chemical nickel-plating processes.

Customized process controllers for hard-chrome or hard-anodizing applications are used for the selective automation of manually operated treatment plant. This method permits complex processes to be managed with ease. The winner of a 2008 Technology Award in the USA, the AxD/VPC combination of PP/PPR power supply and controller delivers improved performance in acid copper deposition and other applications. The AxD/VPC product range stands for material savings and improved, reproducible coating characteristics.

BANDELIN electronic GmbH & Co. KG is coming to the show with a new generation of cyclone reactors. An established specialist in ultrasonic cleaning technology, the company is presenting cyclone reactor units for the high-intensity flow-through sonification of liquid media. These are also used in process engineering, e.g. for homogenizing, suspending or emulsifying larger sample quantities.

Ditec Dr. Kahlich & Langer GmbH has developed a new module for the integration and visualization of key operating parameters for automated electroplating plant. This enables the management to check on the current status of the production line at the push of a button.

About SurfaceTechnology

From 20 to 24 April 2009, SurfaceTechnology will be showcasing the entire surface technology process chain under the HANNOVER MESSE umbrella. More than 300 exhibitors from 25 countries will gather in a net display space of 10,000 square meters in Hall 6 to provide an overview of new surface treatment developments and solutions.
