"Energy" trade fair a major success at HANNOVER MESSE

HANNOVER MESSE 2009, 20 to 24 April

* More than 100,000 visitors attracted by energy-related displays

* Successful debut of Power Plant Technology show

* "Wind 2009" to become the fourth member of the "Energy" family in Hannover

Energy efficiency and climate protection were keynote themes at HANNOVER MESSE 2008. HANNOVER MESSE's lineup of three energy-related fairs taking place side by side - Energy, Power Plant Technology and Pipeline Technology - is something which no other trade fair in the world can offer. Oliver Frese, who is responsible for the energy portfolio at Deutsche Messe, comments: "Our energy shows in Hannover have been writing a true success story, with excellent turnout on the part of exhibitors and an extremely large number of satisfied visitors. And looking ahead to 2009, a new chapter to this success story is about to be written." Frrese was referring to the upcoming premiere of "Wind 2009" as a new addition to the international Energy lineup at HANNOVER MESSE.

Over the past several years, HANNOVER MESSE has substantiated its claim to being the central showcase and knowledge-sharing platform on the subject of energy efficiency and future sustainability. No other trade fair features such comprehensive and in-depth coverage of this topic. More than 1,000 exhibitors presented their energy-related technologies on a total display area of approx. 40,000 square meters, breaking all previous records. More than 100,000 visitors were drawn to the various energy displays.

One in every two visitors attending HANNOVER MESSE headed for the energy-related exhibits in halls 11, 12, 13 and 27. No fewer than 30,000 visitors attending Energy came from outside Germany. An impressive 90 percent of the visitors were professionals. This year saw the successful premiere of Power Plant Technology - a major international fair devoted to the planning, construction, operation and maintenance of power stations boasting nearly 50,000 visitors, half of them from abroad. Thorsten Herdan, managing director of VDMA Power Systems, reports:

"Right from the start, Power Plant Technology established itself as a distinct event under the HANNOVER MESSE umbrella. With full order books and an outstanding outlook on the global energy market, the power station industry is booming. This trend was reflected by the mood in Hannover. The exhibiting companies reported that they were very satisfied with the outcome of the trade show. Professionals and experts from across the globe came here to inform themselves about the latest technological trends and product developments."

Over a period of several years, Hannover's energy shows have been achieving steady growth: Since 2004, the total display area dedicated to energy has risen by 23 percent, while the number of exhibitors has grown by 17 percent. The Energy showcase has met with a very positive response from the marketplace.

Oliver Frese explains: "At HANNOVER MESSE we present a balanced mix of conventional and regenerative energy technologies at the same time and place, providing an ideal setting for measuring up to the competition and getting down to business. Our concept is unique worldwide." Energy presents the entire production and value-added chain - from generation, supply and distribution to the conversion and storage of energy.

Current issues and trends are discussed at the show in various meetings, seminars and conferences. The highlight at HANNOVER MESSE was the World Energy Dialogue. Taking place this year for the third time in succession, it boasted a platform of top-flight speakers from industry, science and politics who addressed topical themes and issues. The keynote theme of this year's World Energy Dialogue was "The Future of Power Plants and Grids", which attracted approx. 650 visitors from 25 countries.

Other highlights at Energy this year included the Forum "Life needs Power", which attracted some 2,500 visitors over the five days of the event, and the ESCO Forum on energy services and contracting, which was attended by 20 percent more visitors compared with last year. Both these events are organized by the German Electrical and Electronic Manufacturers' Association (ZVEI). Another popular display category was "Renewables", a collaborative initiative on the part of the makers of HANNOVER MESSE, the German Renewable Energy Federation (BEE) and the German Wind Energy Federation (BWE).

This year saw a significant increase in attendance at the Bioenergy display. One of the major attractions for visitors was the display staged by exhibitors from the wind energy segment. Stefan Lütkemeyer, head of sales and distribution at ENERCON GmbH: "The number of contacts achieved with customers and suppliers compares very well with last year's event. Furthermore, we have seen a steady increase in visitor turnout from abroad. Interesting exhibits such as a 1:1 model of the E-82 and the aluminum rotor blade of an E-20 proved particularly popular with visitors."

In 2009 HANNOVER MESSE will feature its own independent trade fair dedicated to wind energy. "Wind" will take place in Hannover every two years (in the odd-numbered years), alternating with HusumWindEnergy, which takes places in the even-numbered years in Husum.

Andreas Eichler, assistant to the Board of Management of Vestas Deutschland GmbH, points out: "We view HANNOVER MESSE as an arena for political dialogue on the future of the energy market, particularly with respect to climate protection. By stopping off at the Vesta stand, Germany's Chancellor Merkel was expressing an interest in promoting wind energy."

The export forum on renewable energy also proved extremely popular with visitors. HANNOVER MESSE boasts the world's biggest joint presentation of hydrogen and fuel cell technology. More than 150 exhibitors in 25 countries showcased their expertise in this sector.

Energy-efficient mobility solutions were showcased at the special event Clean Moves, which comprises a forum and an accompanying exhibition. This year Clean Moves was located in Hall 27, close to the 10,000 Solar Gigawatt Forum, where over a period of two days some 900 visitors were able to gain an informed insight into the future-oriented theme of solar thermal energy - a bridge between renewables and power stations.
