- tomorrow's technologies opening doors in today's crisis

    * 15th Group Exhibit Hydrogen + Fuel Cells (H2+FC), Europe's largest hydrogen and fuel cell expo
    * 148 Exhibitors from 22 nations in Energy Hall 13, Booth G 66
    * Fuel cell-powered vehicles in the Ride + Drive outdoor area
    * Press conference (in German) on April 20th at 2:30 pm with the German Minister of Transport Wolfgang Tiefensee

148 exhibitors from 22 nations will participate at Europe's largest hydrogen and fuel cell expo - the Group Exhibit Hydrogen + Fuel Cells in Hall 13. New in 2009 trade fair visitors can test out fuel cell-powered electric vehicles at a 3000m² Ride+Drive outdoor area. During the opening press conference on Monday, April 20th at 2:30pm, the German Federal Minister of Transport, Building and Urban Affairs Wolfgang Tiefensee and experts from the industry will state their views on the topic: Fuel cells and electric mobility - tomorrow's technologies opening doors in today's crisis. The press conference, held in German, will conclude with a question and answer for journalists and media.

Fuel cell and battery - the dynamic duo of future mobility

Wilhelm Karmann GmbH (Osnabruck, Germany) and Proton Motor Fuel Cell GmbH (Puchheim, Germany) will present the EcoCarrier, an emission-free utility vehicle for municipal deployment in sanitation or landscaping. Mass production of the battery-powered version of this vehicle is already well underway. However the HY3 Model features a hydrogen fuel cell (from Proton Motor) which powers the engine and charges the battery simultaneously. This solution bypasses the time-consuming recharging process via external charging stations. Refuelling the HY3 EcoCarrier with hydrogen requires only a minute's time. With this unique fuel cell system, the HY3 achieves a 250 km driving range; the conventional 200kg lead battery is no longer necessary.

Hytruck B.V. (Beverwijk, The Netherlands) will exhibit their hybrid-fuel cell distribution truck, the C6HE.  A 16-kW fuel cell, supplied by their Dutch partner NedStack fuel cell technology B.V. (Arnhem), produces electricity from hydrogen, thereby providing the energy needed for the Li-Ion battery. A regenerative braking system also feeds its energy back to the battery. The 7.5T truck, with its one-of-a-kind drive line, reaches speeds of up to 85 km/h and possesses an operational range of over 350 km.

Ontario, Canada-based Hydrogenics will showcase a fuel cell-powered tow tractor as well as a fuel cell hybrid power pack for industrial trucks. The emission-free P250 PureMotion Tow Tractor from Linde can be utilized in a variety of tasks such as transport of luggage and cargo at airports. Its 10kW continuous output (30kW peak output), its traction force of 5000N and its rapid refuelling greatly increase the P250's range of application. Furthermore, the tow tractor's design makes it particularly advantageous for multi-shift operating conditions.

Test drive at the Ride+Drive outdoor area

Fuel cell-powered electric scooters and vehicles from SFC Smart Fuel Cell AG (Brunnthal, Germany) will be on display at the Ride+Drive area outside Hall 13. Trade fair visitors are invited to take a test drive/ride in these eco-friendly vehicles. With a simple swap of the methanol cartridge, refuelling is completed in a matter of seconds. The fuel cell onboard functions as a "mobile electric socket," charging up the battery during drive time. Within the past 4 years, SFC Smart Fuel Cell has sold 13,000 of their fuel cell units for commercial use.

Stationary fuel cells for residential and industrial use

Fuel cell heating systems (CHP) provide environmentally-friendly heat and power for homes. These CHPs contain reformers which transform natural gas from the distribution grid into hydrogen and carbon-dioxide. Within the fuel cell a silent "cold combustion" takes place as the hydrogen reacts with the air, thereby producing water. The fuel cell CHP provides decentralized power and also recycles the waste heat for heating within the home. At the IBZ Initiative Brennstoffzelle booth, visitors can view several different CHPs with outputs ranging from 1-5kW. The energy suppliers and CHP manufacturers of the IBZ fuel cell initiative are working to have 800 of these emission-free heating and power systems installed and operating by 2012.

The exhibitor MTU Onsite Energy (Ottobrunn, Germany) will show fuel cell systems with power outputs of 250-350kW that generate electricity and heating for large-scale consumers such as for industrial or municipal use. These high-temperature fuel cells can run on various types of fuel such as biogas, natural gas and sewage gas. Over 20 of these HotModule systems have been implemented throughout Europe, totalling in nearly 50 years of operation.

Among technologies presented by the exhibitors at the Group Exhibit Hydrogen + Fuel Cells are portable and mobile fuel cell systems, fuel cell components, hydrogen production, transport, infrastructure, and storage, reformers, test systems, educational fuel cells and much more.
