Mario Dominguez Returns Indy as an Official Ambassador

Indy 500 Practice Indianapolis Motor Speedway Wednesday, May 14, 2008

The rain let up and the track stayed dry enough for a little bit of running today…22 laps worth for Mexican star Mario Dominguez. Of course the team was wishing for more, but they are thankful for every lap right now. It was just enough to evaluate the changes they have made since last Saturday, which was the last day they ran. Dominguez and the PCM crew now have 147 laps total with the IndyCar and they are thankful for every one of them!

Dominguez was busy over the two-day break. He traveled to Mexico City and was given the title "Mexico City’s Official Ambassador for Tourism and Sport" by the government of Mexico City. The press conference took place at the sacred "Angel de la Indepencia." The National monument sits in the middle of the city on Reforma, but remains under very strict security.

Vincente Fox, the former President of Mexico celebrated his victory there. He summoned the World Cup soccer team to celebrate there after their accomplishments and he also summoned Mario Dominguez to the Angel when he finished third at the Mexico City Champ Car race in 2003. Yesterday’s ceremony was held at the Angel of Independence, a great honor and acknowledgment for Dominguez.

Wednesday Practice 17 22 41.061 219.319

Mario on the day: "Wow…this is crazy weather! I am grateful for the 22 laps we ran because for us every lap is like gold! We ran just enough to get an idea of how the changes we’ve made over the last few days feel.

We are still fight too much under steer, but at least we know that and the engineers have something to work with tonight. I just returned today from Mexico City where I received a very nice honor yesterday when the city named me their "Official Ambassador of Sport and Tourism.

" I’ve received such incredible support from my home city and it makes me very proud. Hopefully the sunshine will return and we’ll be back on track making more progress tomorrow."

Today’s Travel Tip from Mario: "The Angel de la Indepencia" is one of the most recognizable monuments in Mexico City. She gracefully watches over the city, from the roundabout over Paseo da la Reforma, one of the busiest avenues in Mexico City.

The Angel was built to memorialize the centennial of the beginning of Mexico’s War of Independence in 1910. I am very proud to wear the Mexico City logo which features the Angel. I carry her with me."
