Scuderia Ferrari driver Felipe Massa, 2007 Formula One World Championship contender and lights-to-flag winner of the last Grand Prix in Turkey, recently became a video star as he surprised unsuspecting customers at a Shell service station in his home country, Brazil.
Massa, best known for his quick laps and brave overtaking moves on the Formula One track, has taken some time away from the race circuit to appear in the next instalment of Shell’s popular viral series in celebration of the longstanding Shell technical partnership with Ferrari in Formula One.
‘Video Star’ was the first of two virals shot on-site at a Shell service station in Massa’s home city of Sao Paulo. A video screen was specially set up over one of the pumps, playing what unsuspecting customers first thought was a car care video featuring Felipe Massa explaining characteristics of the Formula One-derived road products, Shell V-Power fuel and Shell Helix motor oil. Little did they realise that an amused Massa was sitting only a few feet away, in a specially designed DJ booth located in the store.
‘Security style’ cameras picked up customers’ surprised reactions as they realised Massa was tailoring his advice and comments to them personally! Competing to impress him, Shell customers were challenged to imitate a Formula One car - which led to hilarious results.

More accustomed to driving a sleek red Ferrari at over 300km per hour, rolling onto the Shell forecourt to refuel a classic yellow Fiat 600 during the shooting of the second viral, ‘Fiat 600 Formula One’ saw a complete change of pace for the fiery Brazilian.
Kitted out in his Ferrari Formula One race suit, Massa caused quite a stir amongst customers as he casually filled up with Shell V-Power fuel. But it was not the humble rumble of the Fiat 600 engine that customers heard as Massa pulled out of the site, but the full throated roar of a 2007 Ferrari Formula One engine!
Felipe Massa commented on his filming experience: "For sure it was really fun to do this shoot with Shell. Normally at the track we are all so busy concentrating and working together on our race – it was a nice change to do something so different together, especially in my home country. Some of the reactions from the Shell customers when they realised it was me were really funny too!"

The new Felipe Massa virals are the next instalment in a series from long-standing Scuderia Ferrari technical partner, Shell. The first virals, featuring retiring Scuderia Ferrari driver and seven-time Formula One World Champion, Michael Schumacher, were released at the end of 2006. These extremely popular virals were viewed well over one million times on public video websites like youtube and featured on pre-race Formula One television broadcasts in many countries.
Alberto Friedrich, Shell Brands International says: "We are really excited about the new virals with Felipe Massa. They are a great way to bring our technical partnership with Ferrari from the track to the Shell road car environment. The race versions of Shell V-Power fuel and Shell Helix motor oil recently powered Felipe to his third victory of the season, in Turkey, so no one is better placed to understand our products. Plus, he is a fun character and much loved by our customers."
Shell began its technical partnership with Enzo Ferrari in the 1930s. In 1947, the first Ferrari drove out of the factory gates in Maranello, Italy, powered by Shell. Shell was there at its first ever Formula One win in 1951 and to date, it has helped Ferrari to eight FIA Formula One Constructors’ World Championship titles and 11 Drivers’ titles.
In 2007, Shell was recognised with a special Ferrari award for ongoing innovation and contribution to the performance of Scuderia Ferrari and Ferrari Gran Turismo road cars. But the technical partnership is about more than just track success - it’s about transferring that race technology to the road. The learnings Shell takes from Ferrari led it to develop its world-class Shell V-Power road fuel and Shell Helix motor oil.
