Each day he spends several hours in physical therapy, speech therapy and occupational therapy.

The Trach was down-sized and capped today - Jason is talking and making jokes, asking 100 questions and eating real food.

One day later than I thought - but it happened earlier than the medical team expected. Jason was moved from ICU Trauma to 'Step Down' today.
No more ventilator - only a little oxygen.
The Trach will be capped soon and removed as soon as they are sure he can cough and swallow correctly - and he is doing that already. He is in a private room, totally awake, aware,

The gastric problem is slowly resolving - hopefully by tomorrow they can remove the gastric nose tube.
I have a feeling he might move to the 'step down' unit tomorrow or Tuesday. Please keep praying.
The hardest part for Jason is just now beginning. Depression has slipped in - but he is being very cooperative and partcipating in his recovery process.

He did motion today, asking if he can still drive and I assured him that he would be all well and whole again.
After he kept asking about all the hoses, etc., I offered him a mirror. He very quickly agreed, looked at himself and the Trach for quite some time and seemed to be at ease with the situation.

No complaints of pain, just very weak and still some withdrawals (hallucinations) - but stronger and recuperating quicker than the docs and nurses expected.

The ventilator settings were turned down another little bit - Jason tolerated it well.
He is awake part of the day and smiling at the nurses occassionally (never at me).
He is showing signs of withdrawal and handling them with complete calmness.

Jason was awake during most of the 4 visitation hours.
He tried to communicate since he can't speak due to the ventilator. He is moving hands, arms and legs and even lifted his head off the pillow.

- it was stopped this morning. He will be waking up more frequently until finally it will be out of his system.
Keep praying, please - we are still on the ventilator - but things are progressing well.

This morning, he was stable enough for a 30 minute, risk free surgery of inserting the ventilator tube into the bottom of his neck.
I think he will be much more comfortable without having the hose in his mouth and down his throat and it will also be easier to wheen him off completely.

Jason is still tolerating his ventilator settings being turned down a tiny bit each day.
Color is returning to his face and he looks relaxed and is taking a few breaths on his own along with the respirator.

Today, Jason took a break from baby steps and stayed at the same level.
He wakes occassionally and requires reassurance and explanation for what happened and where he is.
I am told that the sedation medication also has the effect of amnesia which causes him not to remember from minute to minute.

"A bigger step today. The ventilator settings were dropped again and after tolerating them for most of the day, the paralytic drip was disconnected.
This will slowly release Jason's body from being paralyzed and hopefully, he will take a few breaths on his own along with the respirator.

Yesterday, Jason's ventilator was set back to the original setting, which he tolerated quite well.
Today the plan is to stop the paralytic drip and see how he toleratesthe new setting with only the sedative meds.

The oxygen level he is being given was dropped to 45% (better than expected).
If he continues this way, they will slowly take him off the current sedation method as well as the paralysing drug and go back to the previous milder sedation.

Since Jason's status remained unchanged, it was decided to add some sedation medication and put him into a full-paralyzed state in order to give him complete rest - he doesn't have to take even one breath on his own.
