Cluster of young challengers score double race victories in third round of UAE National Sailing Championships

Spirit of Juniper skippered by Jo Gillespie made the perfect start to the Jumeirah Regatta today as the battle for the cruiser title got under way.
Gillespie won the opening Division One race from Glwyn Rowlands in Twister and Loon skippered by Jereon Leenan on the first of two days of action in one of the highlights of the UAE sailing calendar.
Toby O’Connell, skipper of the 50-foot yacht Yo! and winner of last month’s Phuket King's Cup Regatta in Thailand, scored victory in race two, but third place was still good enough to keep Gillespie in the overall lead.
The Jebel Ali Sailing Club husband and wife combination of Connor and Maede Ward made a flying start in the catamaran class, winning the opening race and following up with second place in the next to take the early overall lead.
While the seniors battled for honours, many of the UAE’s top young sailors continued their fight to decide the 2006-2007 UAE National Sailing Championships, of which the Jumeirah Regatta marks the third of five rounds.
Several young hopefuls made the perfect start, winning both the first two of four scheduled races on the day in 15-20 knot onshore winds.
In the laser 4.7 class, Talal Salem of Emirates Heritage Club Abu Dhabi looked unbeatable, taking the early lead from Marcus O’Connell of Dubai Offshore Sailing Club and Emirates Heritage Club mate Khalifa Al Kaldi.
Dubai International Marine Club’s Adel Khalid was equally dominant in the laser radials as he grabbed the advantage over the first two races from Justin Walsj of Jebel Ali Sailing Club and DOSC’s Oskar Ceneborg.
Also winning their first two races were Alastair Tate of DOSC in the laser standard class, Saeed Salem Saeed of Emirates Heritage Club in the optimists, DOSC’s Marcel Herrera in the Toppers, and Guy Wolfenden and Tom Hemmingway of JASC) in the double handers.
Meanwhile, one race win and a second place in the optimist cadet class gave DIMC’s Denis Walzl the lead from Liam Westerman of Abu Dhabi International Marine Club and DOSC’s Sophie Haines (DOSC)
