Former champions Gilberto Simoni and Johnny Hoogerland are some of the ex-professional riders to participate in the first MiddleEastCyclingTour from 8 until 14 March 2019.

The MiddleEastCyclingTour is the first cross-border sport event for peace in the world and has been added by the UCI (Union Cycliste Internationale) in their Cycling for All calendar.

“I am impressed by the project”, said two-time Giro d’Italia winner Gilberto Simoni. “The combination of amateur and hobby cyclists together with professional riders is one thing, the fact that we ride in regions where all people dream of peace makes it unique. All national and local authorities collaborate. Jordan, Palestine Territory and all parts of Israel will give us a warm welcome and will send riders as well. I am thrilled to participate in this event.”

Alongside Simoni, former Dutch national champion Johnny Hoogerland will be one of the participants. “Two years ago, my compatriot and current time trial world champion Annemiek van Vleuten, rode the MiddleEastCyclingTour test event. She enjoyed the stunning scenery and landscapes, the challenging roads, the cultural heritage and the hospitality of the local people. The region has so much to offer, I need to be there”, declared Johnny Hoogerland.

Some 60 riders already registered for the first MiddleEastCyclingTour. Amongst them also former Italian pro rider and Giro d’Italia podium finisher Marzio Bruseghin.

The MiddleEastCyclingTour will start in Jordan with a circuit race in the old City of Amman, followed by stage finishes in the historical city of Petra and Aqaba at the Red Sea. After a rest day in Eilat, the MiddleEastCyclingTour continues with the longest stage to the unique Mitzpe Ramon crater. After a long descent in stage 5, the race will arrive at Neve Zohar at the Dead Sea.

On the last day riders travel to Jericho in the Palestinian Territories, where they finish the first half-stage. Part two of that stage goes from Jericho to Jerusalem. MiddleEastCyclingTour stages will be timed with respect for all kind of participants, receiving full mechanical, medical and logistical support in safe circumstances. March offers sunny days and warm temperatures.
