18.05.2006: Toyota Formula1 motor racing driver Jarno Trulli joined Team New Zealand in America's on Monday May 15th.

Sailing as 18th man in the match against his countrymen ITA77 (Mascalzone Latino), the Italian driver quickly learned that America’s Cup racing is quite different from F1, despite the many parallels that can be drawn between the sports including carbon fibre construction, sophisticated telemetry measuring every vital sign on boat and car.

On Sunday Trulli was driving at speeds of more than 300 km/h on the racetrack in Barcelona; the next day he was getting used to 10 or 11 knots in the light airs off Valencia. (Light breeze at sea)

The Italian racing driver was impressed by the facilities at the team’s base and the technical side of the sport: ‘ Formula 1 and America’s Cup are the top in motor sport and sailing, no question about that. Before the start it was quite impressing the way the crew was working and handling the boat to obtain the best position before passing the starting line. I was also astonished to notice the physical efforts required, but also the quietness and the concentration on board.’

Jarno Trulli had just the time to thanks Grant Dalton, and the entire Team New Zealand crew, to rush at the end of the afternoon from Valencia Port to the Paul Ricard circuit in the South of France, were at 09:00pm he was sitting in his F1 car preparing his seat for the next day testing with the new TF106B.
