Seamless overage of entire energy complex at HANNOVER MESSE

HANNOVER MESSE 2009, 20 to 24 April

* Powerful trio: Energy, Power Plant Technology and the new Wind show

* Energy efficiency a hot topic throughout HANNOVER MESSE

The energy boom at HANNOVER MESSE continues unabated. Five months ahead of next year's show, everything points to a continuation of the steady growth in energy-sector themes we have seen in recent years. 80 percent of the designated display space in halls 11, 12, 13 and 27 has already been booked. Energy efficiency and climate protection were the dominant themes at HANNOVER MESSE 2008.

"In 2009, we expect to top this year's results - HANNOVER MESSE has well and truly become the world's biggest energy fair," says Oliver Frese, who is responsible for energy-sector displays at HANNOVER MESSE. In 2009, the Wind trade fair will for the first time be staged under the HANNOVER MESSE umbrella.

For a number of years, HANNOVER MESSE has been the energy industry's favored platform for presenting and debating approaches to achieving a balanced energy mix for the future. In 2008, over 1,000 firms from the energy sector exhibited on more than 40,000 sqm (just over 430,000 sq. ft) of display space - a record result. Over 100,000 visitors, 30 percent of whom came from outside Germany, sought out energy displays. 90 percent were trade professionals.

Energy efficiency takes center stage

The secret of Energy's success is its full coverage of the entire energy mix, featuring a concentrated display of everything available in conventional and renewable energy technologies - all in the same place and at the same time. Energy spans the entire energy business value chain, from generation and transmission, through to distribution and storage.

As of this year, Energy also incorporates Power Plant Technology - leading trade fair for power plant design, systems, operations and maintenance. In addition, energy and energy efficiency in industrial processes are prominent themes throughout HANNOVER MESSE. Numerous exhibitors from the subcontracting, automation and power engineering sectors will be focusing in particular on energy efficiency in 2009.

"WIND" premiering in 2009

For the first time, the wind sector will be represented with a standalone tradeshow at the world's most important marketplace for industrial technology. The wind generation business is booming. Worldwide sales amounted to some 20 billion euros in 2007. German companies accounted for a third of this figure, with the lion's share of their sales contributed by exports. Wind will be staged biennially, alternating with Husum WindEnergy.

At Wind, suppliers of plant, components and services as well as installation engineers, operating companies and project finance providers will be showcasing their offerings to decision-makers from around the globe.

Focus on electric mobility

Bio fuels will once again feature prominently at HANNOVER MESSE 2009. At the fourth CLEAN MOVES - leading exhibition and conference platform for energy-efficient mobility technologies - industry experts will be discussing the diverse range of options for sustainable bio fuel production. CLEAN MOVES is a global platform straddling the transition point between the oil technologies of the past and the sustainable mobility solutions of the future.

The wealth of technology solutions on show is truly staggering. It includes electric, gas-powered and hybrid drives, battery and storage technologies, lightweight carbon-fiber construction, logistics, biodiesel, ethanol, vegetable oils, renewable hydrogen and synthetic fuels. In 2009, CLEAN MOVES will for the first time examine opportunities in rail transport and logistics.

Electric mobility will feature as a keynote theme throughout HANNOVER MESSE. It will, for instance, be explored by the EnergyAgency.NRW and its "Competence Network for Fuels and Drive Systems of the Future" at a dedicated CLEAN MOVES workshop. The E-MOTIVE presentation in Hall 24 is also expected to be a major visitor magnet. The initiative by the German Engineering Federation (VDMA) and the Federal Republic's Research Association for Power Transmission Engineering (FVA) puts the spotlight on alternative drive technologies.

Experts consider electric drive systems for the automotive sector to be particularly promising: they produce zero emissions, have universal applications and can be fuelled by a range of primary energy sources, including renewables. The solutions discussed will include hybrid drive systems already on the market, but also new, fully electric drive systems.

Visitors to HANNOVER MESSE will be able to see fuel cell-powered cars 'live in action' on the open-air site in front of Hall 27 and even take them for a test drive. The exhibit is part of the Hydrogen + Fuel Cell Technology pavilion at the Energy show. Around 200 suppliers of hydrogen and fuel cell technologies from 25 countries, including big-name players such as Ballard Power Systems, BASF Fuel Cells, Dana, MTU Onsite Energy, Plug Power and SGL Technologies, joined forces to mount the pavilion. Displays such as these have helped to make HANNOVER MESSE Europe's largest exhibition platform for hydrogen and fuel cell technologies. Stationary fuel cells will be a keynote theme in 2009.

Renewables sector booming

Deutsche Messe reports keen interest in exhibition space in the renewables section of the Energy show at HANNOVER MESSE, with bioenergy ranking as the top performer in the renewables segment. Eco-friendly energy sources like wind, hydropower, photovoltaics, bioenergy and geothermal energy are growing in importance as oil and gas prices soar and supply uncertainty mounts. In response, Deutsche Messe is systematically expanding and developing its energy offering in close partnership with the German Renewable Energy Federation (BEE) and the German Wind Energy Association (BWE).

The economic outlook for renewables is good - not least because of the major reform of Germany's renewables legislation (EEG), which will take effect on 1 January 2009, and is widely expected to significantly boost the industry. Its stated objective is for Germany to meet at least 20 percent of its entire power, heating and fuel requirements from domestically produced renewable sources.

The medium-term outlook is also positive at the European level. In the view of the BEE, the draft energy directive presented by the EU Commission at the start of 2008 provides a good foundation for the EU to meet 20 percent of its total energy needs from renewables by 2020.

Special exhibitions and forums

The energy-sector showcase at HANNOVER MESSE will be complemented by a range of highly popular special exhibitions and forums. These include the "Life Needs Power" forum, the Renewable Energy Forum, the Renewables theme park and the Solar Gigawatt and Geothermal Energy Competence Centers.

The latest additions to the Energy program are the special exhibition 'Processes, Systems & Solutions for the Energy Sector', which examines economic and technical processes in the energy business, and the group pavilion of the German Cogeneration Association (B.KWK), which will be complementing the long-established ESCO Forum (Contracting) for the first time.

In 2009, the SuperConductingCity group stand, featuring a first-time appearance by the German Superconductor Industry Association, will be relocated from its previous location in Hall 2 (Research and Development) to the Energy show in Hall 13. The move comes in response to calls by exhibitors to have the fair's superconductor content integrated with its energy themes.

The change of venue makes sense as most of the exhibits, research and business content pertaining to superconductors actually relate to the energy sector. The reason: in electric generation and distribution, for instance, superconductors yield much higher efficiencies than conventional conductor systems.

WOLRD ENERGY DIALOGUE puts the spotlight on supply security

Security of supply is the keynote theme for the WORLD ENERGY DIALOGUE (WED) in 2009. Held on 21 and 22 April, the WED is a conference where high-caliber representatives from industry, science and politics meet to further the international dialogue on innovative generation technologies, intelligent networks and cross-border opportunities.

Next year's WORLD ENERGY DIALOGUE, which will again be staged in Hall 27, will be chaired and moderated by former German Environment Minister Dr. Klaus Töpfer. In 2009, the event's patron will be Germany's Fedeal Ministry of Economics and Technology (BMWi).
