Factory Automation - Control and visualization in a single tool

In accordance with a clearly defined vision and the new standard IEC 61499, nxt Control says it has developed a new concept for engineering open, distributed systems. The company will be demonstrating how distributed control systems and the associated visualization in an engineering tool can be planned and configured with the help of new software. This is apparently possible independent of the specific hardware and the resulting application is completely reusable with other hardware. As is explained, the new automation software nxt Control is based on the IEC 61499 standard, the successor to IEC 61131.

However, the Austrian developers insist that they have achieved much more than that. The object-oriented concept reportedly allows the joint engineering of control and visualization components. Real devices and system components are encapsulated as software objects, so-called CATs (Computer Automation Types). These objects can be reused again and again very simply and always contain the control component, the visualization, the documentation, and the process connection. With the solution, a maximum degree of independence from hardware and topology is seen as just as important as a full orientation around the needs of the user.

3D display systems for simulation and training

The immersive high-end installations from Project Syntropy are said to represent a new generation of inexpensive and high-quality 3D-capable display systems for simulation and training environments. As the developers point out, the systems are modular in design and implement particularly durable industrial components, aspects that make them much more flexible than conventional concepts and lead to lower operating costs. The standardization of the parts, for example, enables relatively simple expansions or reductions of the system scope.

In addition, new display concepts also serve to enhance the flexibility. These include an Infinite Screen or so-called Turntable systems that allow the projection of 3D contents onto real objects, for instance for design simulation purposes. A special feature to be presented in Hannover will be tracking with dynamic viewpoint adjustment to produce highly realistic 3D visualizations.

This system aligns the position of a 3D object according to the perspective of the observer and thus conveys the impression of moving around the object. As the Magdeburg-based company sees it, the improved cost structure and increased flexibility of 3D simulation systems is accelerating the industrial deployment of interactive 3D applications in more and more new areas.

Track, trace and authentication for products

Bayer Technology Services will be unveiling their new Protexxion technology, which is billed as a safer method of identification than existing biometric methods such as fingerprinting or iris scanning because of its higher resolution. It has been primarily developed to help identify counterfeits and support track-and-trace applications in the area of supply chain optimization and is based on the Laser Surface Authentication technology invented by Ingenia Technology.

The technology is now available in the form of Protexxion Tracking, an all-round solution for robust industrial applications with sensors, software and database hosting. It reportedly allows the tracking of components in production and maintenance without using markings. In the case of metal parts, the surface is scanned at a specific point using the ST 10 sensor. The unique information can be used at any point in the production process or supply chain for unambiguous identification. The complete solution apparently includes sensors, software, database hosting and diverse services from consulting, design, project management and adaptation of the packaging line to installation and system maintenance

Secure labels for transparent product protection

As part of their Protexxion technology platform for product protection, Bayer Technology Services will be showcasing their new Secure Label application specifically geared towards customers who need labels for purposes of transparency. It is also seen as ideal for products whose surface is not rough enough for the laser-optic method. As the developers explain, in the case of these kinds of products, customers can now take advantage of pre-registered labels from the company, known as Secure Labels. Once applied, the labels cannot be removed without being damaged.

Customers can apply these labels themselves to any products or use them as seals on packaging. The solution is said to ensure unique authentication and verification worldwide over the Internet without the need for the products themselves to be scanned. The layout of the labels can be tailored to meet customer requirements.

Unique card and reader combination for secure ID

A new technology to be premiered by Bayer Technology Services at the fair involves the combination of the company's Protexxion readers and ID cards made of Makrofol ID. A special security film containing tiny metallic particles known as OV-Dots has been specially developed by the German exhibitors. Thanks to the unique distribution of the particles, the film is said to possess a distinct reflection characteristic, which is generated as a code. This code is recognized by the readers and compared with the code stored in the central database.

This procedure apparently ensures a high degree of security since the code is not electronically stored on the card but actually integrated into the material from which it is made. The Protexxion Cards system reportedly enables unique authentication when used with the corresponding reader. As is explained, the solution utilizes the visible, invisible and forensic properties resulting from the random distribution, position and alignment of the OV-Dots in the film and, subsequently, in the body of the card. The chief applications are seen in bank cards, credit cards, and ID documents.

Hydraulic hybrid system for mechanical drive trains

Bosch Rexrodt will be explaining the advantages of their HRB Hydrostatic Regenerative Braking (HRB) system for commercial vehicles and mobile equipment. As is explained, the Parallel HRB solution is a hydraulic hybrid for vehicles with no hydrostatic transmission, for example for vehicles used in refuse collection and public transit buses. The use of the system is said to result in significant fuel savings of up to 25 percent and provide improved acceleration, depending on the particular focus of the application.

According to the manufacturers, the regenerative braking system works by storing brake energy in a hydraulic pressure reservoir and relieves the load on the main drive when the vehicle is accelerating. The hydraulic axial piston unit is coupled to the mechanical drive train through a gearbox. When braking is applied, the axial piston unit converts kinetic into hydraulic energy and pumps hydraulic fluid into the pressure accumulator, whereby the pressure in the accumulator increases. The pressurized hydraulic fluid in the accumulator actuates the axial piston unit, which now works as a motor. Hydraulic energy is then converted into kinetic energy.

Energy  - Dry-type transformer with higher efficiency

ABB will be introducing their new Resibloc 99-Plus dry-type transformer, which is claimed to reduce energy losses under full load by up to 32 percent. Compared to the current Compact type, and in addition to previous measures taken to reduce no-load losses, the latest development in cast resin transformers is now said to minimize load losses as well. Depending on the rating, the new transformer has an efficiency factor of up to 99.23 percent, which is apparently a very good value for distribution transformers that exceeds applicable standards. Although efficiency has only increased by 0.38 percent over the existing type, the decisive factor is said to lie in the energy savings.

Even at a medium utilization level of only 20 percent, the efficiency rate is reportedly significantly higher than with a standard transformer. The reduced load losses greatly lower the operating costs of the transformer. Since companies often have up to several hundred transformers in use in the relevant applications, the new devices can thus cut operating costs considerably. The units are conceived as distribution transformers with ratings from 1,000 to 2,500 kVA at operating voltages of 12 and 24 kV.

Subcontracting - Rocket-propelled metal forging and pile driving

The Bulgarian exhibitors from B+K will be presenting their pile-driver hammer propelled by a rocket engine. As is pointed out, rocket technology is also suitable to propel industrial engines such as metal-forging and pile-driving hammers. As regards the benefits, the company points to an increased ram speed above 7 m/s and up to 18 m/s as well as the ability to drive piles at any angle in space. The percussion speed can be regulated to account for the strength of the pile used. The increased percussion power allows firms to upgrade their lighter hammers to perform the work of a heavier-category hammer.

Additional benefits are seen in the ability to change the energy of every stroke to exercise additional pressing force during impact. This has apparently led to the Complex Stroke operation, a combination of press and hammer at the same time. In addition, the machine can work underwater and can use ecological fuels like natural gas and gaseous hydrogen. As is explained by the manufacturers, who own a rocket firing range for dynamic testing, they developed the rocket-propelled pile-driver hammer some 40 years ago. An industrial rocket engine was subsequently designed that runs on liquid fuel.

MicroTechnology - UHF metrology for more efficient mobile phones

Polytec will be pointing out how metrology can help mobile phones save energy. The UHF-120 measuring instrument will be unveiled as an ultra-high frequency vibrometer that helps manufacturers optimize mobile phones in terms of energy efficiency. The key is said to lie in so-called SAW (Surface Acoustical Wave) filters. These tiny components convert electric waves into acoustic surface waves, while specific mechanical properties determine the filter quality. The metrology tool can reportedly help avoid strays, which cost a lot of energy.

As is explained, it characterizes the waves with their high frequencies and small amplitudes with the necessary precision for the first time. The device measures mechanical vibrations up to several hundred megahertz and shows what happens in the smallest parts of the mobile phone. Beside the frequency, it also analyzes the form of the oscillation. If strays are detected, the developers can apparently then locate the weak points and eliminate them. The overall goal is to be able to run mobile phones for one year without charging.
