BIOTECHNICA 2009 to feature more themes and hot topics than ever

16.04.2009: BIOTECHNICA 2009 brings the future of biotechnology vividly to life. Europe's most important gathering for the biotech industry will be showcasing the very latest trends in biotechnology worldwide from 6 to 8 October.

BIOTECHNICA 2009, 6 to 8 October

    * Strong focus on new business, business development and knowledge transfer
    * Bio-informatics as a major trend
    * Premiere of BioITWorld Europe Conference
    * New "Bone-tec 2009" congress on modern techniques for bone regeneration

BIOTECHNICA 2009 brings the future of biotechnology vividly to life. Europe's most important gathering for the biotech industry will be showcasing the very latest trends in biotechnology worldwide from 6 to 8 October.

"We are looking forward with confidence to the next BIOTECHNICA", says Stephan Kühne as the responsible member of the Board at Deutsche Messe in Hannover. "With its unique combination of exhibition, congress, partnering event, award and careers platform, it will stimulate new interest and engagement right across the biotech industry."

This year's show focuses in particular on new business leads, business development, knowledge transfer and its commercial exploitation. "Exhibitors and visitors alike are expecting great things of BIOTECHNICA in 2009. They are coming to Hannover to explore new business opportunities and build on their existing business contacts", notes Kühne. Many big-name companies such as Eppendorf, Millipore, VWR International, Qiagen, Roche Diagnostics and Sarstedt have already confirmed that they will be exhibiting. Also taking part are biotech institutions engaged in research and product development, while the work of national and international BioClusters and industry associations will be showcased in the form of group presentations.

Also on hand will be Germany's Federal Ministries of Nutrition, Agriculture and Consumer Protection (BMELV), Education and Research (BMBF) and Economics and Technology (BMWi), as well as the European Commission - each with a stand of their own. The show's range of exhibits spans bioengineering, laboratory equipment and biotech applications in the pharmaceutical industry, medicine, food, agriculture, industrial biotechnology and environmental protection.

"This year we are placing special emphasis on bioinformatics", adds Kühne. It is, he points out, an absolutely integral part of modern biology and pharmacy. So for the first time the show features a separate stand dealing exclusively with "Bio IT". BIOTECHNICA shows how the use of IT systems allows scientists to marshal all kinds of biological data sets and analyze complex phenomena.

Through the participation of the member firms of Life Sciences Research (LSR), which represents the interests of manufacturers of instruments and reagents for the life sciences under the auspices of the Diagnostics Industry Association (VDGH), BIOTECHNICA is also an attractive platform for the life sciences sector. At the "Life Science Spotlight" forum, senior scientists will draw on their fascinating research findings as they present and explain new equipment and techniques, e.g. for the expression of proteins. In addition the "BIOTECHNICA INNOVATIONS FORUM", which is embedded in the exhibition, will be hosting a program of lectures by exhibitors that provides a further opportunity for direct interaction between exhibitors and visitors.

New collaborations with leading international institutes and professional associations will ensure an exciting conference program. "We aim to make this year's program more tightly focused and goal-oriented", says Kühne. "The keynote themes are Bio IT, therapeutic agents and diagnostics/bioanalytics."

Through its collaboration with the US Cambridge Healthtech Institute, BIOTECHNICA 2009 is presenting a series of lectures on current problems and applied methods in bioinformatics. The "BioITWorld" conference, already well established in the USA, is celebrating its European premiere at BIOTECHNICA as "BioITWorld Europe". The themes addressed by the new conference range from "IT Hardware and Software for the Life Sciences" and "Bioinformatics for Genomics" to "Data Integration and Knowledge Management". The collaboration with the Cambridge Healthtech Institute also extends to lecture presentations on the subject of proteins and antibodies.

The internationally respected congress on modern techniques for bone regeneration "Bone-tec 2009" (8 to 11 October) will be staged for the first time in association with BIOTECHNICA. The four-day congress is being organized by the Hannover-based scientific institute Indente, Center for Tissue Engineering. The main focus of scientific interest at the event is the regeneration of bone, cartilage, tendons and ligaments.

Business development, according to Kühne, is a big theme of this year's BIOTECHNICA. "It's all about the connections between research, development and their subsequent commercialization". The European Association of Pharma Biotechnology (EAPB) is organizing the forum "Science to Market", where European research establishments and the biopharmaceutical industry can come together to promote the commercial development of scientific innovations. Meanwhile the "Biotechnology Project Forum", organized by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), will be showcasing biotech projects funded with central government money.

A further highlight is the one-day symposium "Biomanufacturing". Staged in collaboration with Capgemini Consulting, the symposium will examine ways of promoting cooperation between the developers and producers of active agents.

The future financing of research and development is a matter for growing concern in the light of the global economic crisis. So for the first time BIOTECHNICA is hosting a conference on the subject of "Biofinance". The issues up for discussion at the "European Biopolicy Conference" include the "Bio-based Economy" and the economic and political conditions that affect the framing of biopolicy in Europe.

To help the right business partners find each other amidst the clamor of competing offers and propositions, Deutsche Messe is collaborating once again with EBD Group, the leading partnering firm for the global life science industry. Using EBD's online-based networking platform, suppliers, customers, biotech and pharmaceutical firms and finance companies can search for prospective partners in the run-up to BIOTECHNICA and arrange meetings at the show.

There will also be many qualified natural scientists who have come to Hannover specifically to seek out new career challenges. At the "jobvector career day" participating companies can hope to find suitably skilled candidates to fill staff vacancies, while job applicants can learn about new career opportunities in the life sciences.

BIOTECHNICA 2009 will be officially opened on the evening of 5 October, when the EUROPEAN BIOTECHNICA AWARD is traditionally presented. Now worth a total of € 100,000 in prize money, it is the most generously endowed biotech prize in Europe.
